Scott Basset, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, warned on Wednesday at the White House that the United States is preparing to escalate economic pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran by imposing secondary sanctions on financial institutions that trade with the country. Basset described this action as the "financial equivalent" of bombing the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He also threatened to sanction buyers of Iranian oil.

Reuters reported that the U.S. Treasury Secretary told reporters at the White House: "We have told countries that if you are buying Iranian oil, if [the Islamic Republic of] Iran's money is in your banks, we are now ready to impose secondary sanctions."

The maritime blockade of the Islamic Republic by the U.S. began on Monday as the war entered its seventh week. China had previously purchased over 80% of the oil shipped from Iran via tankers. Basset stated, "We believe that with this maritime blockade... Chinese purchases [from Iran] will stop."
    @VahidHeadline

These actions come after the U.S. issued a 30-day exemption for Iranian oil exports at sea; an exemption that, according to Basset, resulted in approximately 140 million barrels of Iranian oil entering the global market. He confirmed that this exemption, which was issued on March 20 and ends on April 19, will not be extended.

At the same time, the U.S. has not extended a similar exemption for Russian oil. Reports also indicate that the U.S. Treasury has sent letters to countries including China, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman, warning about the activities of banks that Washington claims are linked to illegal transactions with Iran.

In another development, the U.S. Treasury Secretary announced that Washington has asked Gulf countries to freeze assets related to commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and members of the Iranian government.

JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, in an interview with Fox News about his negotiations with the Islamic Republic delegation in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, said that Washington has clearly made it clear to the Islamic Republic what actions need to be taken, and now the ball is in their court.

He stated, "I'm not saying things went badly; I think some things went well. We made a lot of progress, but we also clearly outlined, and I think this was part of the progress we made, what the conditions are under which the United States can show flexibility."

Vance added, "I think this was the first time you saw the Iranian government and the U.S. government meet at such a high level, perhaps in the history of the current Iranian leadership. So, I see this as a positive point, and I reiterate, we made progress in the negotiations. The big question from here on out is whether the Iranians will show enough flexibility and whether they will accept the critical issues we need to finalize things."

On Monday, he told Fox News, "What the President of the United States has said is that, first of all, Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. Therefore, all our red lines stem from this fundamental principle; because this is an issue for the Iranians to say they will never seek a nuclear weapon themselves. They are willing to say that, and that's good. But you naturally have to verify these things."

The former Trump official added, "There are two specific cases where the President has said we have no flexibility. We need to reach a conclusion that the President has stated regarding the first case, which is the nuclear program. What some call 'the dust,' meaning the enriched uranium that the Iranians currently possess; we have said we want that material to be removed from Iran, and we want to take ownership of it now. Why is this important? Because they currently have access to that material. That material is actually buried underground as a result of the 'midnight hammer operation,' but if you think long-term, the President does not want the next President or the one after that to be worried about this program; therefore, we want to completely remove that material from Iran so that the United States has control over it. That was the first case."

Vance said, "The second case again goes back to the issue of verification. It's one thing for the Iranians to say they are not going to have a nuclear weapon, but creating a mechanism to ensure that does not happen is another discussion. Part of that, naturally, is ensuring that they do not have the capability to enrich uranium; the same way they previously got very close to a nuclear weapon. So these are really two cases that, honestly, I think the Iranians have made progress on. They have moved toward our position, which is why I think we can say we had good signs, but they did not move far enough. So what we decided is that, you know, given that we don't think this current team can reach an agreement in this timeframe, let them return to Tehran, and we will return to Washington, and now this is where we stand today."

JD Vance emphasized in this conversation that the ball is currently in the court of the Islamic Republic.

He said, "We have made it clear where we are willing to be flexible, and we have also clearly stated that nuclear materials must be removed from Iran."

Vance added, "The interesting thing about this issue is that in the process of conducting these negotiations, I think we reached an understanding of how the Iranians negotiate. And that is ultimately the reason we left Pakistan, because what we understood was that they were unable, I think the team that was there was unable to finalize an agreement. They needed to return to Tehran to get confirmation of the conditions we had set from either the leader or from somewhere else."

He said, "So again, I say, whether we will have further discussions or ultimately reach an agreement depends on them. I really think the ball is in Iran's court; because we have put a lot on the table and clearly stated our red lines."

He continued, "We need to see the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. And to be honest, this is one of the issues where the Iranians tried to change the rules in their favor during the negotiations. We made it very clear to them that such a thing is unacceptable."

He stated, "They came back, they came back; if they didn't come back, it doesn't matter to me."

He pointed out the destruction of the Iranian regime's navy and the loss of a significant portion of its missiles, drones, and military power, saying that we took these actions because they broke their promises.

Trump emphasized, "Remember, they lied about the Strait of Hormuz. They said they would open the strait, but they did not fulfill their commitment and did not open it."

The opposition party to Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, has won the parliamentary elections.

The National Election Office of Hungary announced on Sunday evening, April 23, that the "Tisza" party, which opposes the government of Viktor Orbán, has secured approximately 135 seats out of a total of 199 in parliament based on preliminary results with 45.7% of the votes counted.

Viktor Orbán accepted defeat moments later in a speech against his rival, a former government figure and newcomer to politics who promised a "system change."

Orbán, who has led this Central European country for 16 years, stated: "The election results, although not yet final, are clear and understandable; they are painful for us, but unambiguous."

Polls had predicted unprecedented voter turnout, and Hungarian television showed long lines outside some polling stations in Budapest, the capital.

Reuters reports that if the final results confirm these preliminary estimates, the end of Orbán's 16-year rule will have significant implications not only for Hungary but also for the European Union, Ukraine, and beyond.

This outcome is likely to end Hungary's confrontational role within the European Union and may pave the way for a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan to war-torn Ukraine, which had been blocked by Orbán.

Orbán's defeat could also lead to the release of EU funds for Hungary; funds that this bloc had suspended due to what Brussels described as Orbán's "undermining of democratic standards."

If confirmed, his exit would also deprive Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, of his main ally in the European Union and create a wave of shock among right-wing movements in the West as well as in the White House.

Within Hungary, the victory of the Tisza party could open the way for reforms that the party claims will aim to combat corruption and restore the independence of the judiciary and other institutions.

However, the extent of these reforms depends on whether Tisza can secure a two-thirds constitutional majority necessary to repeal a large part of Orbán's legacy.
