The German Chancellor downplayed the Iranian Foreign Minister's criticism of him on Thursday, February 5, stating that these remarks reflect Tehran's "nervousness and uncertainty."

Friedrich Merz, who is on his first trip to the Persian Gulf since taking office, did not specifically respond to the personal insults directed at him.

Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, accused the Chancellor on social media on Wednesday of "political naivety" and having a "disgraceful personality."

He wrote on X: "The Germans are a great people who have served humanity with their effort and ingenuity. Iran has always welcomed strong relations with Germany." He added, "Therefore, it is all the more regrettable that someone like Mr. Merz is now representing Germany on the global stage."

Araghchi's criticism came just hours after Friedrich Merz stated that if the Islamic Republic of Iran does not end its violence against its people and halt its nuclear program activities, it will face new sanctions. He added, "We are ready to increase pressure on Tehran."

The German Chancellor, at a press conference in Doha, the capital of Qatar, said, "Concerns about military escalation in the region are very high."

He emphasized that Iran must cease its role as a "destabilizing force in the region."

Mr. Merz called on Iran to "engage in dialogue, end aggression, halt its nuclear program in accordance with international agreements, and, most importantly, protect countries like Qatar, Jordan, and Israel from further military threats."

Friedrich Merz added, "Therefore, discussions will intensify in the coming hours," and emphasized that Germany is acting "in close coordination" with the United States.

The German Chancellor is currently on a three-day trip to the Middle East. He has met with Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, and is set to continue to the United Arab Emirates.

He also described Iran's Foreign Minister as someone who seems to communicate with Khamenei and is the person through whom the U.S. is "effectively" in contact with the Supreme Leader. However, Vance added: "But when you can't even talk to someone who truly runs the country, negotiating with such a country is strange and difficult."     U.S. and Iran nuclear talks resumed in Oman;
Direct pressure from 9 regional countries on Washington

Barak Ravid reported, citing two U.S. officials, that the agenda for U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations in Oman has been reinstated for Friday; this decision was made after several Arab and Muslim leaders urgently contacted the Trump administration on Wednesday afternoon, urging Washington to refrain from canceling these talks.

According to one of these officials, regional parties have asked the U.S. to at least hold the negotiations and hear Iran's positions. This U.S. official stated:
"They asked us to keep the meeting and listen to the Iranians. We told them that if they insist, the meeting will take place, but we are very pessimistic about the outcome."

According to this report, at least 9 regional countries have conveyed messages at the highest political levels to the Trump administration, seriously requesting that the Oman meeting not be canceled.

Another senior U.S. official also mentioned that the Trump administration agreed to hold this meeting "in respect of the requests from regional allies" and "to maintain the diplomatic path," although there are still serious doubts about Iran's seriousness in this process.

Trump: Khamenei Should Be Very Concerned

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, said on Wednesday, February 4, in an interview with NBC News that the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran "should be very concerned."

Mr. Trump continued by stating that the U.S. is currently negotiating with Iran and, in response to a question about supporting Iranian protesters, said, "We have supported them."

Meanwhile, Axios reported that U.S. officials have rejected Iran's request to change the location of the scheduled negotiations for Friday. According to two American officials, Washington has decided not to change the designated location for these talks. Axios has interpreted these developments as a sign of the cancellation of negotiations, but official representatives from both sides had not responded to this report by the time this news was published.

Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, on Wednesday announced Washington's readiness to continue talks with the Islamic Republic, emphasizing that any negotiations must be "meaningful" and include a range of topics such as "the nuclear program, ballistic missile program, support for armed groups in the region, and the government's treatment of the Iranian people."
He said, "If the Iranians want to meet, we are ready. They have expressed interest in dialogue... I'm not sure if we can reach an agreement with 'these people,' but let's see what happens."
According to the New York Post, Rubio also expressed hope that internal pressures could ultimately lead to a change of government in Tehran, and referring to the gap between the Iranian people and the ruling authority, he added, "I don't know of another country where the difference between those who govern and those who live there is so great."
He said, "Our long-term hope lies precisely in this reality."

Axios: "Cannon Diplomacy"; Trump's Renewed Effort for a Deal with the Islamic Republic Amid Military Threats

Barak Ravid and Mark Caputo report in their latest piece for "Axios" that Donald Trump enters the planned negotiations on Friday in Istanbul with significant strategic advantages. The heavy U.S. military presence in the region has created a "credible military threat." At the same time, the Islamic Republic, severely weakened and isolated due to recent widespread protests, is in a position of weakness. However, U.S. officials are skeptical that the leader of the Islamic Republic will even be willing to approach Trump's stringent terms for a deal.

Behind the scenes at the White House, serious discussions are underway regarding the effectiveness of military action. Some of Trump's advisors believe that bombing Iran's nuclear facilities would not necessarily lead to the desired political restructuring in Washington and carries the risk of extensive retaliation from Tehran across the region. Axios reveals that three weeks ago, in response to the deaths of thousands of Iranian protesters, Trump was on the verge of issuing an attack order but backed down at the last moment to give a chance to the diplomatic efforts of Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt.

The Axios report also points to the hidden tensions between Israel and the U.S. Israeli military officials, including General Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, have recently met with Pentagon officials in Washington to present their aggressive plans. However, an American official told Axios that "the Israelis want to attack, but the President has not yet reached that point." Trump believes that Iran's current nuclear activities do not constitute an "immediate and legitimate threat" that requires immediate military action, unlike last June.

Ahead of Friday's negotiations, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will meet with Abbas Araghchi on behalf of Trump. While the Islamic Republic insists it will only discuss nuclear issues, Washington is demanding a halt to enrichment, missile limitations, and an end to support for proxy groups. A senior official from the mediating countries has warned that if Iran does not come to the negotiating table on Friday with substantial proposals, it will quickly find itself in a very bad situation.

So either they negotiate on this matter, or we have other options - that's exactly why the Department of War exists."
Referring to Trump's military action against the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities last summer, he added, "He doesn't want it to come to that, and I don't want that path to be taken either, but our duty is full readiness, and of course, we are ready, even more than ready."
The U.S. Secretary of War continued, "President Trump is committed to peace, and if the Islamic Republic is truly serious about a deal, he is also committed to reaching an agreement. We will see what happens; the decision is with the Islamic Republic."

Pete Hegseth's remarks come as the United States has recently established a significant military presence near the Islamic Republic. The arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying strike group in the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area, along with the deployment of more fighter jets and transport aircraft to the region, has strengthened this military presence.

Naz Shakerdoost, the cinema actress, announced: "I will never again play a role in this land that smells of blood. This is my main role."

She wrote on Instagram: "Being here is harder than dying a thousand times... My depression has become so deep that I have lost the boundary between reality and nightmare... My soul cannot bear this horrific historical tragedy of crime... I am an actress; I have learned to live as another with all my skin, bones, and breath, but this time, instead of my forty thousand compatriots, I have been killed... Instead of each of their beloved ones, instead of their family members, I have been torn apart... I no longer even wish to be human... I have a fever..."
