The German Chancellor downplayed the Iranian Foreign Minister's criticism of him on Thursday, February 5, stating that these remarks reflect Tehran's "nervousness and uncertainty."
Friedrich Merz, who is on his first trip to the Persian Gulf since taking office, did not specifically respond to the personal insults directed at him.
Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, accused the Chancellor on social media on Wednesday of "political naivety" and having a "disgraceful personality."
He wrote on X: "The Germans are a great people who have served humanity with their effort and ingenuity. Iran has always welcomed strong relations with Germany." He added, "Therefore, it is all the more regrettable that someone like Mr. Merz is now representing Germany on the global stage."
Araghchi's criticism came just hours after Friedrich Merz stated that if the Islamic Republic of Iran does not end its violence against its people and halt its nuclear program activities, it will face new sanctions. He added, "We are ready to increase pressure on Tehran."
The German Chancellor, at a press conference in Doha, the capital of Qatar, said, "Concerns about military escalation in the region are very high."
He emphasized that Iran must cease its role as a "destabilizing force in the region."
Mr. Merz called on Iran to "engage in dialogue, end aggression, halt its nuclear program in accordance with international agreements, and, most importantly, protect countries like Qatar, Jordan, and Israel from further military threats."
Friedrich Merz added, "Therefore, discussions will intensify in the coming hours," and emphasized that Germany is acting "in close coordination" with the United States.
The German Chancellor is currently on a three-day trip to the Middle East. He has met with Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, and is set to continue to the United Arab Emirates.

صدراعظم آلمان روز پنجشنبه ۱۶ بهمن انتقاد وزیر امور خارجه ایران از خود را کماهمیت جلوه داد و گفت این اظهارات بازتابدهنده «عصبی بودن و عدم اطمینان» تهران است.
فردریش مرتس که در جریان نخستین سفر خود به منطقه خلیج فارس از زمان بهدست گرفتن قدرت به قطر سفر کرده است، بهطور مشخص به توهینهای شخصی مطرحشده علیه خود واکنش نشان نداد.
عباس عراقچی، وزیر امور خارجه ایران، روز چهارشنبه در شبکههای اجتماعی صدراعظم را به «سادهلوحی سیاسی» و داشتن «شخصیتی زننده» متهم کرده بود.
او در شبکه ایکس نوشت: «آلمانیها مردمی بزرگ هستند که با تلاش و نبوغ خود به بشریت خدمت کردهاند. ایران همواره از روابط قوی با آلمان استقبال کرده است.» او افزود: «بنابراین دوچندان تأسفبار است که فردی مانند آقای مرتس اکنون نماینده آلمان در صحنه جهانی است.»
انتقاد عراقچی چند ساعت پس از آن مطرح شد که فردریش مرتس گفت اگر جمهوری اسلامی ایران به خشونت علیه مردم خود پایان ندهد و فعالیتهای مربوط به برنامه هستهای خود را متوقف نکند، با تحریمهای جدیدی روبهرو خواهد شد. او افزود: «ما آمادهایم فشار بر تهران را افزایش دهیم.»
صدراعظم آلمان در یک کنفرانس خبری در دوحه، پایتخت قطر، گفت: «نگرانی دربارهٔ تشدید نظامی در منطقه بسیار زیاد است.»
او تأکید کرد که ایران باید از ایفای نقش بهعنوان یک «نیروی بیثباتکننده در منطقه» دست بردارد.
آقای مرتس از ایران خواست که «وارد گفتوگو شود، به تجاوز پایان دهد، برنامه هستهای را مطابق توافقات بینالمللی متوقف کند و مهمتر از همه، کشورهایی مانند قطر، اردن و اسرائیل را از تهدیدهای نظامی بیشتر مصون بدارد.»
فردریش مرتس افزود: «بنابراین گفتوگوها در ساعات آینده تشدید خواهد شد» و تأکید کرد که آلمان «در هماهنگی نزدیک» با ایالات متحده عمل میکند.
صدراعظم آلمان در حال حاضر در سفر سهروزهای به خاورمیانه به سر میبرد. او با محمد بن سلمان، ولیعهد عربستان سعودی، و شیخ تمیم بن حمد آل ثانی، امیر قطر، دیدار کرده و قرار است در ادامه به امارات متحده عربی سفر کند.
