On Sunday, April 23, the President of the United States criticized the leader of the world's Catholics for his opposition to the war in Iran, accusing him of being weak against "crime, violence, and nuclear weapons."
Donald Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, that "Pope Leo is weak in confronting crime and violence and has performed very poorly in foreign policy."
He added: "I don't want a pope who thinks that having nuclear weapons is okay for Iran. I don't want a pope who thinks that America's attack on Venezuela is bad; a country that sends a massive amount of drugs to the United States and, even worse, empties its prisons, sending murderers, drug traffickers, and criminals to our country."
The President of the United States claimed that "if I were not in the White House, Leo would not be in the Vatican. Unfortunately, Leo's weakness against crime and nuclear weapons is unacceptable to me."
The leader of the world's Catholics had said on April 18 that threats against the people of Iran are "unacceptable."

The Wall Street Journal, citing two informed American officials, reported that the United States presented "a set of clear red lines" as main conditions during negotiations between Islamabad and Iran.

According to the report, one of the most important of these conditions is the complete cessation of uranium enrichment by Iran. The U.S. has also demanded the dismantling of all major enrichment facilities and the retrieval of high-enriched materials.

The report adds that Washington is also seeking the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without any fees for the passage of ships and has emphasized the need for a broader agreement involving regional allies.

In another part of these conditions, the U.S. has asked Iran to stop financial support for proxy groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

According to the Wall Street Journal, these demands have been presented as America's red lines in the negotiations and reflect a tougher approach towards Tehran.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that, in execution of the President's order, it will commence a maritime blockade of all incoming and outgoing traffic to Iranian ports starting at 10 AM on April 13, Eastern Time [Monday at 5:30 PM Iran Time].

At the same time, CENTCOM forces emphasized that the freedom of navigation for vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz to or from non-Iranian ports will not be disrupted.

It has also been stated that prior to the implementation of this blockade, additional information will be provided to commercial mariners through an official notice. All mariners are advised to closely follow maritime notices while operating in the Sea of Oman and routes leading to the Strait of Hormuz and to contact U.S. naval forces via channel 16 for ship-to-ship communication.

The opposition party to Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, has won the parliamentary elections.

The National Election Office of Hungary announced on Sunday evening, April 23, that the "Tisza" party, which opposes the government of Viktor Orbán, has secured approximately 135 seats out of a total of 199 in parliament based on preliminary results with 45.7% of the votes counted.

Viktor Orbán accepted defeat moments later in a speech against his rival, a former government figure and newcomer to politics who promised a "system change."

Orbán, who has led this Central European country for 16 years, stated: "The election results, although not yet final, are clear and understandable; they are painful for us, but unambiguous."

Polls had predicted unprecedented voter turnout, and Hungarian television showed long lines outside some polling stations in Budapest, the capital.

Reuters reports that if the final results confirm these preliminary estimates, the end of Orbán's 16-year rule will have significant implications not only for Hungary but also for the European Union, Ukraine, and beyond.

This outcome is likely to end Hungary's confrontational role within the European Union and may pave the way for a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan to war-torn Ukraine, which had been blocked by Orbán.

Orbán's defeat could also lead to the release of EU funds for Hungary; funds that this bloc had suspended due to what Brussels described as Orbán's "undermining of democratic standards."

If confirmed, his exit would also deprive Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, of his main ally in the European Union and create a wave of shock among right-wing movements in the West as well as in the White House.

Within Hungary, the victory of the Tisza party could open the way for reforms that the party claims will aim to combat corruption and restore the independence of the judiciary and other institutions.

However, the extent of these reforms depends on whether Tisza can secure a two-thirds constitutional majority necessary to repeal a large part of Orbán's legacy.

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, reacted to the recent threats from the United States regarding a maritime blockade, which were made just a day after negotiations in Islamabad. He stated that the Iranian nation has proven over the past 47 years that it does not succumb to military pressure and sanctions.

He warned Washington, saying, "If you come with logic, we will respond with logic, but if you fight, we will fight." He emphasized that the Islamic Republic will not yield to any threats and cautioned the U.S. not to test the "will of the nation," as a "greater lesson" will be taught to them.

These remarks come at a time when, in a war that lasted over a month, the Islamic Republic lost a significant portion of its military infrastructure, with key facilities such as steel factories in Ahvaz and Isfahan and refineries in Khuzestan and Fars province being targeted, which are far from being rebuilt.

Trump says Iran's maritime blockade will be "at a higher level than Venezuela"

The U.S. President stated on Sunday, shortly after announcing that he had ordered the immediate start of a maritime blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, that "we are implementing a complete blockade. We are not going to allow Iran to make money from selling oil to those it likes and not to those it doesn't. It will either be for everyone or for no one; and that's how it will be. You saw what we did with Venezuela. It will be something similar, but at a higher level."

He referred to the blockade imposed last year to prevent Venezuela from selling oil, which ultimately led to a raid by U.S. special forces and the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, and his transfer to the U.S.
In the interview with Fox News, the U.S. President also announced that other countries are set to assist in clearing the Strait of Hormuz of mines laid by Iran.
He said, "We have mine sweepers there. We now have very advanced underwater mine sweepers that are the latest and best, but we are also deploying more traditional mine sweepers. And as far as I know, Britain and a few other countries are also sending mine sweepers."

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated in an interview with Fox News: "We intend to block the Strait of Hormuz; this will take some time."

Earlier, the U.S. President announced on Sunday that the Navy would immediately begin the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and would also seize any vessels in international waters that had paid fees to Iran.

Donald Trump told Fox News that clearing the Strait wouldn't take long.
He added, "NATO now wants to help with the Strait of Hormuz issue. We believe many countries will assist us in this matter. We are deploying more mine sweepers; Britain and a few other countries are also sending mine sweepers."

He emphasized, "When this crisis is over, the price of oil and gas will ultimately decrease."

Donald Trump told Fox News that officials of the Islamic Republic "have not left the negotiating table; I predict they will return and give us whatever we want."
He added, "A post on social media about the destruction of Iranian civilization made the Iranians come to the negotiating table."
Earlier, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, announced that his country would try to facilitate a new dialogue between the Islamic Republic and the U.S. in the coming days.
He said, "It is essential for both parties to adhere to their commitment to the ceasefire."

The U.S. President said, "You probably saw that we passed two very advanced, beautiful, and new destroyers right through the middle of the Strait yesterday, and no one dared to take action against us."
Trump continued, "The reason is that we track the path of the fired weapon; that is, our weapon tracks the origin of the fire and eliminates the people on the other side within three minutes. The technology is incredible."

These remarks from Trump came after U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that two of its missile destroyers had begun mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated in an interview with Fox News that he will not back down from his demands in the ongoing negotiations with the Islamic Republic. Referring to the new round of talks in Islamabad, he emphasized that he has instructed his negotiating team to agree only on "one hundred percent" of U.S. demands, and accepting 90 or 95 percent of the conditions is not acceptable to him.

    Trump's post, machine translation:
So, here's the story: The meeting went well, most issues were agreed upon, but the only matter that really mattered, the nuclear issue, remained unresolved. From this moment on, the United States Navy, the world's premier naval force, will begin the process of blockading any ship that wishes to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. At some point, we will reach a situation where "everyone is allowed to enter and everyone is allowed to exit," but Iran has prevented this situation from happening by claiming that "there may be mines placed somewhere there" and that no one but themselves knows about it.

This is extortion from the world, and the leaders of countries, especially the United States, will never yield to extortion. I have also instructed our Navy to identify and stop any vessel in international waters that has paid Iran fees or tolls. No one who pays illegal fees will have safe passage in open waters. We will also begin the process of destroying the mines that the Iranians have placed in the Strait. Any Iranian who fires at us or at civilian and peaceful ships will be severely crushed.

Iran knows better than anyone how to end this situation; a situation that has already devastated their country. Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their defense and radar systems are practically ineffective, Khomeini and most of what is called their "leaders" are dead; and all of this is due to their nuclear ambitions. The blockade will begin soon. Other countries will also participate in this blockade. Iran will not be allowed to benefit from this illegal extortion. They want money and, more importantly, they seek to achieve nuclear capability.

Furthermore, at the appropriate time, we are fully prepared for the final action, and our armed forces will finish what little remains of Iran.

    Donald J. Trump
    realDonaldTrump
Iran had committed to opening the Strait of Hormuz, but deliberately refrained from fulfilling this commitment. This action has caused anxiety, disruption, and suffering for many people and countries around the world. They claim to have mined the waters, while their entire navy and a significant portion of their mine-laying equipment have been completely destroyed. They may have done such a thing, but which ship owner is willing to take such a risk? This situation has left a large stain of disgrace and a lasting harm on Iran's credibility and what remains of their "leaders," but we have moved past all of this. As they promised, they must begin the process of reopening this international waterway as soon as possible. They have violated almost every possible law.

I was fully briefed by Vice President JD Vance, Special Representative Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner regarding the meeting held in Islamabad; a meeting that was conducted under the kind and highly efficient guidance of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif. They are extraordinary men and continually thank me for saving 30 to 50 million people in a horrific war that could have occurred with India. Hearing these words is always valuable to me; the level of humanitarianism being discussed is unimaginable.

The meeting with Iran began in the early hours of the morning and continued throughout the night; nearly 20 hours. I can talk in great detail about these negotiations and the achievements made, but only one issue matters: Iran is unwilling to give up its nuclear ambitions.

In many ways, the points that were agreed upon are even better than continuing our military operations until a final outcome, but against one issue, all those points become irrelevant: that nuclear power is placed in the hands of such unstable, difficult, and unpredictable individuals.

My three representatives, during this time, as expected, established friendly and respectful relations with the Iranian representatives, namely Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Ali Bagheri, but this is of no importance, as they were completely stubborn and inflexible on the most important issue; and as I have said from the very beginning and for years, Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon.

Following the official announcement of the failure of negotiations between Iran and Washington in Islamabad, several officials of the Islamic Republic reacted to these talks.

On the morning of Sunday, April 23, 1405, the head of the ideological and political organization of the police stated: "Even if an agreement is reached, we will not compromise with infidelity; the agreement is meant to end the war, not to reconcile between the Islamic Republic and the United States." He also called for "an apology from Trump and Netanyahu and their acknowledgment of their mistakes."

At the same time, "Hamidreza Hajibabaei," the deputy speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, emphasized that the Islamic Republic does not have a "negotiating team," and the individuals sent to Pakistan went for "soft warfare" and "struggle in the field of diplomacy" to advance "America's surrender at the United Nations." According to him, any outcome other than this is unacceptable. Regarding the presence of the Islamic Republic's delegation in Pakistan, he stated, "Our negotiation is our war," and the message from "our people" in the streets is that the discourse of the Islamic Republic is "the discourse of the sword." Hajibabaei continued: "The current war of America and Israel against the Islamic Republic is a fundamental war, and as long as we do not bring America to its knees, this war will continue."

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic, wrote in a message that the negotiators sent by the Islamic Republic to Islamabad, Pakistan, were "guardians of the rights in the field."

"Mohammad Javad Zarif," the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic during the presidency of "Hassan Rouhani" and a senior member of the Iranian negotiating team during the "JCPOA," also referred to a statement by J.D. Vance in a press conference after the negotiations ended, where he said, "They decided not to accept our conditions." In his X account, he wrote: "Do you want to know why the negotiations failed? No negotiation—at least with Iran—will succeed based on 'our/your conditions.' The United States must learn this: you cannot dictate terms to Iran. It is still not too late to learn."

"Ismail Baqaei," the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, after the official announcement of the end of negotiations, emphasized the atmosphere of "distrust and suspicion" between the two negotiating delegations, stating: "We reached an understanding on a number of issues, but on two or three important topics, there was a gap in views, and ultimately, the discussions did not lead to an agreement."

☄️JD Vance: We Did Not Reach an Agreement

JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, announced early Sunday in Islamabad that the Islamic Republic decided not to accept the conditions of the United States. He added that we are returning without any agreement.

Vance said: Let me first express a few points of appreciation; first of all, to the Prime Minister of Pakistan and Field Marshal Munir, both of whom were outstanding hosts. Any shortcomings in these negotiations were not due to the Pakistanis; they did an amazing job and truly tried to help us and the Iranians bridge the gaps and reach an agreement. We have been working for 21 hours now and have had several substantive discussions with the Iranians. This is good news. But the bad news is that we did not reach an agreement, and I think this is much worse news for Iran than for the United States. Therefore, we are returning to the United States without reaching an agreement. We have made our red lines very clear; the issues we were willing to compromise on and the issues we were absolutely unwilling to budge on. We stated this as clearly as possible, and they chose not to accept our conditions.

I won't go into all the details because I don't want to negotiate in public after 21 hours of private discussions. But the simple reality is that we need to see a firm commitment that they will not seek nuclear weapons and will not pursue tools that would allow them to quickly acquire nuclear weapons. This is the main goal of the President of the United States, and this is what we tried to achieve through these negotiations. Again, I say, their nuclear program as it was — meaning the enrichment facilities they previously had — has been destroyed. But the simple question is: Do we see a fundamental commitment in the Iranians' will not to develop nuclear weapons? Not just for now, not just for two years from now, but for the long term. We have not seen such a thing yet. We hope to see it.

We talked about all those issues, and beyond that, several other topics were discussed. Those issues were certainly raised, but again, I say, we could not reach a condition where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms. I think we were very flexible and accommodating with them. The President told us, "You must come here in good faith and make your best effort to reach an agreement." We did that, but unfortunately, we could not make any progress.

It is clear that we were in constant contact with the President. I don't know exactly how many times, maybe half a dozen or a dozen times during these 21 hours we spoke with him. We also clearly spoke with Admiral Cooper, with Pete (Hegseth), Marco (Rubio), and the entire national security team. We had several conversations with Scott Bassett as well. You see, we were constantly in touch with the team because we were negotiating in good faith. And we are leaving here, but we are leaving with a very simple proposal; a memorandum that is our "last and best offer." We need to see if the Iranians will accept it or not.

The Islamic Republic has rejected the United States' claim that two of its naval destroyers passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

Fars News Agency, close to the IRGC, quoted the spokesperson for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic as saying: "The claim by the CENTCOM commander regarding the approach and entry of American vessels into the Strait of Hormuz is categorically denied." He stated: "The initiative for the passage of any vessel lies with the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Earlier, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a message on the social media platform X that American forces "are preparing conditions for mine clearance in the Strait of Hormuz," and that two vessels "passed through the Strait of Hormuz as part of a broader mission to ensure this waterway is free of naval mines."

Nawaf Salam, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, announced that he has canceled his trip to the United States following pressure from Hezbollah.

It is still unclear what impact this decision will have on negotiations with Israel, which were scheduled to take place this week with U.S. mediation.

These developments coincide with ongoing direct negotiations between Iran and the U.S. in Islamabad, where a ceasefire in Lebanon had previously been mentioned as one of Iran's conditions for holding those talks.
