According to Reuters, more than 100 international law experts from universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and the University of California stated in the letter, published on Thursday, that the behavior of U.S. forces and statements from senior U.S. officials "raise serious concerns about violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including potential war crimes."

The signatories of the letter also referenced comments made a few weeks ago by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who stated that the United States does not fight with "stupid rules of engagement."

پیت‌ هگست در روز پنجشنبه سیزدهم فروردین‌ماه از ژنرال رندی جورج خواست که بلافاصله از جایگاهش کناره‌گیری کرده و خود را بازنشسته کند.

دلیل رسمی این موضوع هنوز اعلام نشده؛ اما سی‌بی‌اِس به نقل از یک منبع گزارش داده بود که پیت هگست، فردی را در این جایگاه می‌خواهد که «دیدگاه‌های او و دونالد ترامپ را در نیروی زمینی ارتش به اجرا بگذارد».

ژنرال رندی جورج، ۶۱ ساله، تازه‌ترین مقام ارشد نظامی‌ است که در دوره دوم ریاست جمهوری دونالد ترامپ برکنار می‌شود؛ آن‌هم در حالی که ایالات متحده درگیر جنگی گسترده با ایران است.

این نظامی کهنه‌کار آمریکایی در طول نزدیک به چهار دهه خدمت در ارتش، بارها به عراق و افغانستان اعزام شده بود و در پست‌هایی همچون دستیار ارشد لوید آستین وزیر دفاع دورۀ جو بایدن هم انجام وظیفه کرده بود.

دونالد ترامپ از زمان بازگشت به کاخ سفید، چندین چهرۀ شناخته‌شده و مقام ارشد نظامی را برکنار کرده است؛ از جمله ژنرال چارلز «سی‌ کیو» براون، رئیس پیشین ستاد مشترک نیروهای مسلح، که کمتر از یک‌ماه پس از آغاز دورۀ دوم ریاست جمهوری دونالد ترامپ اخراج شد.

از جمله دیگر مقام‌های ارشد نظامی که در این دوره برکنار شده‌اند، می‌توان به دریادار لیزا فرانکِتی فرمانده نیروی دریایی و گارد ساحلی، ژنرال جفری کروز رئیس آژانس اطلاعات دفاعی، ژنرال جیمز اسلیف قائم مقام رئیس ستاد نیروی هوایی و سه وکیل نظامی اشاره کرد.

رئیس ستاد نیروی هوایی ایالات متحده هم تنها دو سال پس از انتصاب و در حالی‌که هنوز دو سال از دورۀ حضورش در این مقام باقی مانده بود، بدون هیچ توضیحی اعلام بازنشستگی کرد.

فرماندۀ نیروهای جنوبی ایالات متحده هم، تنها یک‌سال پس از حضور در این مقام، ناچار به اعلام بازنشستگی شده بود.

پیت هگست وزیر دفاع آمریکا اصرار دارد که رئیس‌جمهور، صرفاً فرماندهان مورد نظرش را برگزیده و در پست‌ها کلیدی می‌گمارد؛ اما قانون‌گذاران دموکرات، از احتمال «سیاسی‌شدن» ارتش ایالات متحده، که به‌شکل سنتی، از نظر سیاسی بی‌طرف بوده است، ابراز نگرانی می‌کنند.
