This advancement came after Republican Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana voted in favor of it. A few days ago, in the state party primaries to continue his Senate seat, Cassidy lost to a candidate backed by Trump.

According to CNBC, despite the resolution on war powers passing with a vote of 50 to 47, it still has a slim chance of becoming law. The resolution must first be finalized in the Senate, then the House of Representatives must vote on it, and then Donald Trump will almost certainly veto it.

Al-Arabiya reported on Tuesday, May 28, based on "leaked details" from the latest proposed version from Iran to the U.S., about a series of new demands and proposals from Tehran focusing on a ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz, and the nuclear issue.

According to this report, Iran has called for a long-term, multi-phase ceasefire and has also requested that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz be done gradually and with security guarantees.

Based on this information, Tehran has agreed to a long-term halt of nuclear activities instead of a complete dismantling of its nuclear program. It has also been proposed that the transfer of enriched uranium reserves, instead of to the U.S., be conditionally done to Russia.

Al-Arabiya also reported that Iran has backed away from demanding compensation but, instead, is seeking economic facilities and concessions.

According to this report, Iran is also seeking several international guarantees for any potential agreement and is trying to separate the maritime issue and the Strait of Hormuz from the complexities related to the nuclear negotiations.

In another part of this report, it is mentioned that Tehran has called for the involvement of Pakistan and Oman in managing any potential tensions or friction in the Strait of Hormuz and emphasizes the use of language and a political framework that would allow for the "preservation of the political image of the Islamic Republic."

On Tuesday, May 28, the Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan announced the seizure of assets belonging to 129 individuals in the province on security charges.

Nasser Atabati referred to these individuals as "anti-revolutionary and separatist groups" and accused them of "anti-security actions and collaboration with hostile countries," stating that their assets have been confiscated "for the benefit of the nation."

The spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry says the negotiations between Tehran and Washington are "ongoing," and the Iranian government has received "revisions" from the United States in response to its proposed plan.
Ismail Baqai stated at a press conference on Monday, May 17, that last week, despite the American side publicly declaring that Iran's proposal was rejected, "we received a set of corrective points and considerations from the Pakistani mediator on their behalf."

On Monday, May 28, Amnesty International reported that Iran executed a "record" number of 2,159 people in 2025; a figure that has caused the global statistics to rise to the highest level since 1981.

The London-based organization stated that at least 2,707 people were executed worldwide in 2025, although executions carried out in China are not included in this figure. Amnesty International noted that "thousands of executions" took place in China, which has the highest use of the death penalty in the world, but details remain unclear due to the "confidentiality of government data" in this communist country.

The organization added that the global statistics for 2025, which include executions in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Yemen, Singapore, and the United States, have increased by more than two-thirds compared to the total for 2024.

The report stated: "This trend has been most pronounced in countries where officials have intensified their control over power by restricting civil space, silencing dissenting voices, and disregarding the protections established in international human rights laws and standards." According to Amnesty International, the "unprecedented increase in recorded executions in Iran" has occurred while officials of the Islamic Republic, especially after last summer's 12-day war with Israel, have "intensified the use of the death penalty as a tool for political repression and control."

Amnesty International and other human rights groups have stated that following widespread anti-government protests in December of last year and also after the onset of the war with Israel and the United States in March, the use of the death penalty in Iran has increased.

سازمان عفو بین‌الملل روز دوشنبه ۲۸ اردیبهشت گزارش داد که ایران در سال ۲۰۲۵ تعداد «بی‌سابقه» دو هزار و ۱۵۹ نفر را اعدام کرده است؛ رقمی که باعث افزایش آمار جهانی تا بالاترین سطح از سال ۱۹۸۱ به این سو شده است.

این سازمان مستقر در لندن اعلام کرد که در سال ۲۰۲۵ دست‌کم دو هزار و ۷۰۷ نفر در سراسر جهان اعدام شده‌اند، هرچند اعدام‌های انجام‌شده در چین در این آمار لحاظ نشده است.
عفو بین‌الملل گفت «هزاران اعدام» در چین، که بیشترین استفاده را از مجازات اعدام در جهان دارد، انجام شده، اما جزئیات به‌دلیل «محرمانه بودن داده‌های دولتی» در این کشور کمونیستی نامشخص است.
