Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, welcomed the return of two French citizens who were freed after three and a half years of detention in Iran on Wednesday, April 19, calling their return "the end of a terrible suffering and ordeal."
Cécile Kohler, 41, and Jacques Paris, 72, who had been imprisoned in Evin prison since 2022 on charges of espionage, had been at the French embassy in Tehran since November.

They were allowed to leave Iran on Tuesday. This surprising move came as France was trying to distance itself from the conflicts in the Middle East. The two arrived in Paris on Wednesday morning.
After meeting and embracing them at the Élysée Palace, Macron wrote on X: "We are very happy to have brought Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris back to France after three and a half years of hardship in Iran. This is a great relief for all of us."

Maryam Akbari Monfared, a political prisoner, has been released from prison after 17 years without even a single day of leave.

Maryam Akbari Monfared, who comes from a family of victims of the mass executions of prisoners in the 1980s, was arrested in 2009; the Revolutionary Court sentenced her to 15 years in prison on charges of "moharebeh (waging war against God) and acting against national security." This 15-year sentence was supposed to end in October 2024 in Semnan prison, but this political prisoner was sentenced to an additional two years in prison for "propaganda against the regime."

According to the regulations of the Prison Organization, prisoners who have served one-third of their sentence can apply for leave. However, Maryam Akbari Monfared was imprisoned for 17 years in Evin, Semnan, and Qarchak prisons and was deprived of leave.

مریم اکبری منفرد، زندانی سیاسی، پس از ۱۷ سال زندان بدون حتی یک روز مرخصی، از زندان آزاد شد.

مریم اکبری منفرد که از خانوادهٔ قربانیان اعدام‌های زندانیان دههٔ ۱۳۶۰ است، سال ۱۳۸۸ بازداشت شد؛ دادگاه انقلاب او را به اتهام «محاربه و اقدام علیه امنیت ملی» به ۱۵ سال زندان محکوم کرد.
قرار بود این حبس ۱۵ ساله، مهر ۱۴۰۳ در زندان سمنان به پایان برسد، اما این زندانی سیاسی در زندان به اتهام «تبلیغ علیه نظام» به دو سال حبس دیگر محکوم شد.

بر اساس آیین‌نامهٔ سازمان زندان‌ها، محکومانی که یک‌سوم دورهٔ حبس‌شان را گذرانده باشند، می‌توانند از مرخصی استفاده کنند. مریم اکبری منفرد، اما ۱۷ سال در زندان‌های اوین، سمنان و قرچک محبوس و محروم از مرخصی بود.

He wrote: "No uranium enrichment will take place, and the United States, in cooperation with Iran, will extract and destroy all nuclear dust buried deep in the ground (B-2 bombers)."
"Now and previously, it has been and is under careful satellite surveillance (space power!). Since the date of the attack, nothing has been untouched."
He continued, "We are negotiating tariffs and sanctions exemptions with Iran and will continue to do so. Many of the 15 points {of U.S. conditions} have been agreed upon."
Mr. Trump also stated that any country that sells weapons to Iran will immediately be subject to a 50% tariff on all goods exported to the United States.
He mentioned that there are no exceptions in this regard.

The U.S. Vice President says President Donald Trump is "impatient" to advance the process of ending the war with Iran and has instructed his negotiating team to engage with the Iranians "in good faith."

J.D. Vance, speaking during his visit to Hungary on Wednesday, April 19, stated that a deal could be possible if Iran negotiates sincerely, but warned that while some parts of the Iranian government are constructively engaging in negotiations, others are not taking such an approach.

He described the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran as "fragile."

Vance said, "The President of the United States has told me and the entire negotiating team, including the Secretary of State and Special Representative Steve Witkoff, to go and work in good faith to reach an agreement." [Trump later mentioned that Vance might not be able to participate in the negotiations for security reasons. I will post about that later.]

The U.S. Vice President added, "He is impatient; he is eager to achieve progress. We have been told to negotiate in good faith, and I think if they negotiate in good faith as well, we can reach an agreement. But that is a big 'if,' and ultimately, how the negotiations go depends on the Iranians themselves. I hope they make the right decision."

The President of the United States described this development as an important step towards resolving one of the long-standing crises and achieving peace in the Middle East.
