The European Parliament has once again voted in favor of placing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the list of terrorist organizations. The result of this vote is non-binding, and the opinion of the Council of the European Union will be decisive in this matter.

Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, wrote in a message on the social media platform X: "From the streets of Tehran to the heart of the European Parliament, the message is clear: Iran must be free. Iran will be free." According to Metsola, the European Parliament emphasizes the necessity of targeting oppressors, declaring the IRGC as a terrorist organization, and holding accountable those responsible for crimes.

Earlier, in January 2023, in response to the repression of the Iranian people during the "Women, Life, Freedom" uprising, the European Parliament also called for the IRGC to be placed on the list of terrorist organizations of the European Union. iranintl The European Parliament overwhelmingly passed a resolution against the Islamic Republic, calling on the Iranian government to end the violent repression of protests and the killing of protesters.

In this resolution, which was adopted on Thursday, January 22, the parliament members expressed full solidarity with Iranian protesters, demanding an end to executions, the release of detainees, and "accountability of the regime for its crimes."

This resolution also calls for the expansion of the European Union's restrictive measures against the Islamic Republic and for the conditionality of the EU's relations with Iran based on real progress towards democracy and respect for human rights in the country. In this resolution, the members of the European Parliament expressed their anger and disgust at the repression and widespread killings perpetrated by the Iranian government against protesters in Iran. This body, expressing full solidarity with the Iranian people and their "brave and legitimate" protest movement, strongly condemns the widespread, deliberate, and disproportionate use of force by security forces.

The resolution, which was passed with 562 votes in favor, 9 against, and 57 abstentions, warned that the killing of thousands of protesters represents a "horrific change in the regime's method of suppressing protests; a shift from deterrence to strategic elimination." The members of the European Parliament also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all protesters, human rights defenders, and journalists currently detained in Iran.

At the same time, the Parliament urged the Council of the European Union to promptly place the IRGC, the Basij Force, and the Quds Force fully on the list of terrorist organizations.

The expansion and strict enforcement of the European Union's restrictive measures, including asset freezes and visa bans for oppressors, are among the other demands of the European Union. This body also welcomes the recent U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic and calls for swift action by the European Union against all officials and entities responsible for repression. The resolution condemns the Islamic Republic's efforts to censor protests through internet shutdowns and calls on the European Union and its member states to increase technical and financial support for tools to bypass censorship and protection against cyber and informational manipulation in Iran.
