According to the Wall Street Journal, early on Tuesday morning, several armed speedboats affiliated with Iran approached a U.S.-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and ordered the vessel to stop; an action assessed in the context of escalating tensions and simultaneous strengthening of U.S. military presence in the region.
According to a maritime security company, six fast boats equipped with heavy weapons approached the tanker as it entered this strategic waterway, demanding that it shut down its engine and prepare for inspection. However, the tanker increased its speed and moved away from the area, later being escorted by a U.S. warship.
U.S. officials have confirmed that the armed Iranian boats attempted to stop the vessel, which was ultimately guided to safety with military escort.
