According to a report by The New York Times, Donald Trump is considering a targeted military strike against Iran; a strike that, if diplomacy fails, could lead to a much broader operation in the coming months aimed at weakening and even overthrowing the leadership of the Islamic Republic.

The New York Times reports that although a final decision has not yet been made, Trump is inclined to carry out a "preemptive strike" in the coming days to show Tehran officials that they must agree to completely halt their nuclear weapons capabilities. He has told his advisors that if his demands are not accepted, he will leave open the possibility of a more extensive military strike later this year to help bring down Ali Khamenei; although even within the U.S. government, there are doubts about whether such a goal can be achieved solely through airstrikes.
