Wall Street Journal: Pentagon Warns of War Consequences; Shortage of Defensive Munitions and Risk of Force Erosion

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Pentagon has issued serious warnings to President Trump regarding the dangers of a large-scale military operation against the Islamic Republic. These warnings, primarily raised by General Dan Keen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during National Security Council meetings, emphasize risks such as potential casualties among American and allied forces, depletion of air defense stocks, and severe erosion of U.S. military capability.

According to the Wall Street Journal, while the options on the table range from limited strikes to a multi-day air campaign aimed at toppling the regime, military officials are concerned that a prolonged war could impose heavy costs on strategic munitions reserves. This not only complicates the protection of regional partners against retaliation from Tehran but also undermines the United States' readiness for a potential future confrontation with China. In this context, and following increased concerns about Iran's response and that of proxy groups, the State Department on Monday ordered the evacuation of non-essential personnel and families of U.S. embassy staff in Lebanon.

The newspaper cites military sources stating that the United States has enough interceptor missiles (including Patriot, THAAD, and SM-3) for only "about two weeks" in the event of a massive missile barrage from Iran.

The experience of the 12-day war last June and the two-month operation against the Houthis in Yemen revealed concerning gaps in the supply of these munitions. Currently, the U.S. has deployed 13 destroyers and several defense systems in Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Israel to counter potential threats.

Another part of the Wall Street Journal report focuses on the critical condition of the aircraft carrier "Gerald Ford." This ship, the largest warship in the world, has been on mission since last June and is on track to set a record for the longest continuous deployment (11 months).

Navy officials warn that the crew of the carrier is under severe pressure and fatigue; a situation that previously led to incidents and the loss of several fighter jets on the "Harry Truman" carrier. Additionally, technical issues such as a malfunction in the Ford's sewage system have made conditions even more difficult for sailors.

Despite these pressures, Anna Kelly, White House spokesperson, emphasized that Trump listens to the diverse opinions of his national security team and will make a final decision based on national interests; a decision that, according to officials, has not yet been finalized and partly depends on the outcome of negotiations on Thursday in Geneva.
