Witkoff: Current US-Iran negotiations are currently focused on nuclear issues

Axios reported that Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of the US President, said in a private meeting on Tuesday that the Trump administration is asking the Islamic Republic to accept that any future nuclear agreement remains in effect indefinitely. This was stated by an American official and two other sources familiar with his remarks.

According to the 2015 agreement, which Trump canceled, most restrictions on Iran's nuclear program were set to gradually expire between eight to 25 years after signing. Iran also committed to never pursue nuclear weapons.

Removing such sunset clauses (the sunset provisions in the JCPOA) could strengthen the agreement and make it easier for Trump to sell it domestically as an upgraded version of the Obama agreement.

According to sources, Witkoff told a group of AIPAC supporters in Washington: "We start from the premise with the Iranians that there are no sunset clauses. Whether we reach an agreement or not, our premise is this: you must behave this way for the rest of your life."

Witkoff also stated that the current US-Iran negotiations are focused on nuclear issues for now, but if an agreement is reached, the Trump administration is willing to hold subsequent discussions about Iran's missile program and support for proxy forces. He added that at that stage, the US wants other regional countries to participate in the negotiations. Link
