Tom Cotton, the Republican senator, said in an interview with Fox News that Iranian officials want to build missiles that can reach the United States. He added that Iran has a space launch program and emphasized that the technology from this program is the same technology that can be used to build intercontinental missiles and target the United States.
Cotton also stated that the Islamic Republic has believed for 47 years that it cannot win a war, but it can win any negotiation, adding: "I think with Trump, there is a possibility that he could lose both."
He continued that Iranian officials refuse to stop enriching uranium and that the issue is not just about the nuclear program. According to him, Iran possesses thousands of ballistic missiles that threaten U.S. bases in the Middle East and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, and some of these missiles can even reach U.S. bases in Europe.
This Republican senator added that the U.S., Israel, and their allies have a significant military presence in the region, and "it is much easier to target a shooter before he releases his shot than to try to stop the bullet in the sky."

تام کاتن، سناتور جمهوری‌خواه، در گفت‌وگو با فاکس نیوز گفت مقام‌های ایران می‌خواهند موشک‌هایی بسازند که بتواند به آمریکا برسد. او افزود ایران برنامه پرتاب فضایی دارد و تأکید کرد فناوری این برنامه همان فناوری‌ای است که می‌توان از آن برای ساخت موشک‌های قاره‌پیما و هدف قرار دادن ایالات متحده استفاده کرد.
کاتن همچنین گفت جمهوری اسلامی ۴۷ سال است باور دارد نمی‌تواند در جنگ پیروز شود، اما می‌تواند هر مذاکره‌ای را ببرد و افزود: «فکر می‌کنم با ترامپ احتمال دارد هر دو را ببازد.»
او ادامه داد مقام‌های ایران از توقف غنی‌سازی اورانیوم خودداری می‌کنند و موضوع فقط برنامه هسته‌ای نیست. به گفته او، ایران هزاران موشک بالستیک در اختیار دارد که پایگاه‌های آمریکا در خاورمیانه و در دیه‌گو گارسیا در اقیانوس هند را تهدید می‌کند و برخی از این موشک‌ها حتی می‌توانند به پایگاه‌های آمریکا در اروپا برسند.
این سناتور جمهوری‌خواه افزود آمریکا، اسرائیل و متحدانشان آرایش نظامی گسترده‌ای در منطقه دارند و «بسیار آسان‌تر است پیش از آنکه تیرانداز تیر خود را رها کند او را هدف قرار دهیم، تا اینکه بخواهیم تیر را در آسمان متوقف کنیم.»
