On Sunday, Donald Trump held separate phone calls with Kurdish leaders in Iraq to discuss the U.S. and Israel's war with Iran and potential developments following it.

Three sources familiar with the matter told Axios that these calls are particularly significant due to the deployment of thousands of Kurdish forces along the Iran-Iraq border and their control over strategic areas that could play a role in the conflict.

According to Axios, Trump spoke with Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani just one day after authorizing airstrikes, with one source describing these discussions as "sensitive." It is reported that these calls took place after months of behind-the-scenes efforts by Benjamin Netanyahu.

Some U.S. officials believe that Israel's assessment of the Kurds' readiness to confront Iran may be overly optimistic, although they consider their field capacity to be significant. The Kurds, who govern an autonomous region in northern Iraq, could add an important ground dimension to the air campaign with experienced Peshmerga forces; however, their tense relations with Turkey could pose challenges. The White House spokesperson did not provide details about these calls.
