The New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing "three Iranian officials familiar with the discussions," that members of the Assembly of Experts held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the selection of a new leader for Iran, with Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, being presented as the "main candidate for succession."

These officials stated that the members of the Assembly of Experts are considering the possibility of announcing on Wednesday morning that Mojtaba Khamenei will succeed his father. However, some of them have expressed concerns that announcing this decision could make him a target for the United States and Israel. These officials spoke on the condition of anonymity regarding these sensitive internal discussions.

According to these sources, the members of the Assembly of Experts held two virtual meetings on Tuesday, one in the morning and another in the evening. Meanwhile, Israel targeted a building in the city of Qom; a building that was supposed to be the venue for the Assembly of Experts' meeting to select the new leader, but according to the Fars news agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guard, it was empty at the time of the attack.

روزنامه نیویورک‌تایمز روز چهارشنبه در گزارشی از قول «سه مقام ایرانی آگاه از گفت‌وگوها» نوشت که اعضای مجلس خبرگان رهبری روز سه‌شنبه برای بررسی انتخاب رهبر جدید ایران جلسه برگزار کردند و مجتبی خامنه‌ای، پسر علی خامنه‌ای، به‌عنوان «گزینهٔ اصلی جانشینی مطرح شده است.»

این مقام‌ها گفتند اعضای مجلس خبرگان در حال بررسی این موضوع هستند که شاید از صبح چهارشنبه اعلام کنند مجتبی خامنه‌ای جانشین پدرش خواهد شد. با این حال برخی از آنان ابراز نگرانی کرده‌اند که اعلام این تصمیم ممکن است او را به هدفی برای ایالات متحده و اسرائیل تبدیل کند. این مقام‌ها به شرط ناشناس ماندن درباره این رایزنی‌های حساس داخلی صحبت کردند.

به گفته این منابع، اعضای مجلس خبرگان رهبری، روز سه‌شنبه دو نشست مجازی، یکی در صبح و دیگری در شامگاه، برگزار کردند. در همین حال اسرائیل ساختمانی را در شهر قم هدف قرار داد؛ ساختمانی که قرار بود محل نشست مجلس خبرگان برای انتخاب رهبر جدید باشد، اما به گزارش خبرگزاری فارس که به سپاه پاسداران نزدیک است، هنگام حمله خالی بوده است.
