Reuters: 80 people killed in US submarine attack on Iranian frigate Dena

Reuters reports, citing a spokesperson for the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry, that "at least 80 people" have been killed in the attack by a US submarine on the Iranian frigate Dena in the Indian Ocean.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters moments ago that "a US submarine sank an Iranian frigate that it believed was safe in international waters."

The frigate Dena was targeted by the US submarine on Wednesday morning (March 4) in waters near Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister stated that the country's military "rescued 32 Iranian sailors," but it has been reported that the status of 140 other sailors remains unknown.

Sri Lankan police and defense officials announced on Wednesday that the country's navy has recovered the bodies of 87 crew members from an Iranian destroyer that was sunk by a US submarine near the southern shores of the island on Wednesday.
A naval official, who wished to remain anonymous, told AFP: "We have collected 87 bodies, and the search for other individuals who are still missing continues."
Police and navy spokespersons stated that 61 sailors are still missing. According to officials, 32 people have been rescued and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Galle.
