The United States has granted a 30-day license to all countries to purchase Russian crude oil and petroleum products that are currently stranded at sea.
Scott Basset, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, stated that this action was taken in response to the turmoil in global energy markets due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, with the aim of helping to stabilize these markets.
Basset wrote in a message on social media platform X just hours after oil prices surged to over $100 per barrel: "The United States is taking decisive steps to strengthen stability in global energy markets while also working to keep prices down in the face of threats and instability posed by the Iranian terrorist regime."
The U.S. Treasury Department emphasized that this action is "short-term and precisely limited," only covering oil that was already en route and will not create "significant financial benefit" for the Russian government.
Basset also clarified: "The temporary rise in oil prices is a short-term and transient disruption that will bring significant long-term benefits for our country and economy."
