Christiane Amanpour, senior correspondent for CNN, says a knowledgeable source told her that Ali Larijani was considered the most favorable transitional option for the United States and Israel until early this fall, but became a "target" from mid-February.

On Wednesday, March 27, Amanpour wrote on the social media platform X that Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, who was killed early Tuesday, March 26, "became a target when he called for the suppression of protesters, took a leading role in verbal attacks against the United States and Israel, and played a key role in designing operational actions for the Revolutionary Guards, especially against the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council."

She did not identify her knowledgeable source, and her claim has not yet been independently verified, nor have officials from the Islamic Republic of Iran reacted to it.

امانپور روز چهارشنبه ۲۷ اسفند در شبکه اجتماعی ایکس نوشت علی لاریجانی، دبیر شورای عالی امنیت ملی ایران که بامداد سه‌شنبه ۲۶ اسفند کشته شد، «زمانی به هدف تبدیل شد که خواستار سرکوب معترضان شد، در حملات لفظی علیه ایالات متحده و اسرائیل در صف اول قرار گرفت و نقش کلیدی در طراحی اقدامات عملیاتی سپاه پاسداران، به‌ویژه علیه کشورهای شورای همکاری خلیج فارس، بر عهده گرفت».

او منبع آگاه خود را معرفی نکرده و ادعای او تاکنون به‌طور مستقل تأیید نشده و مقام‌های رسمی جمهوری اسلامی ایران نیز واکنشی به آن نشان نداده‌اند.
