On Tuesday, April 6, the President of France announced that two French citizens who had been detained in Iran are on their way back to their country. Emmanuel Macron wrote on X: "Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris have been released after three and a half years of detention in Iran and are on their way back to France." These two French citizens were released in November after more than three years in prison on charges of espionage. A source in the French Foreign Ministry stated that they left Iran early Tuesday morning with the French ambassador as part of a diplomatic convoy and "are currently in Azerbaijan." Cécile Kohler and her partner Jacques Paris were arrested in May 2022 and spent their imprisonment in Evin Prison. They were accused of attempting to "incite labor protests," a charge that their families strongly denied.

The state news agency IRNA reported that the release of Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, two French citizens, was part of an agreement between Tehran and Paris, and France had committed to the release of Mahdieh Esfandiari and to withdraw its complaint against the Islamic Republic at the International Court of Justice. Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian citizen, was sentenced in March 2025 by a court in Paris to four years in prison and a permanent ban on entering French territory for "glorifying terrorism" by supporting the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel through social media.

رئیس‌جمهور فرانسه روز سه‌شنبه ۱۸ فروردین اعلام کرد دو شهروند فرانسوی که در ایران بازداشت بودند، در مسیر بازگشت به کشورشان هستند.
امانوئل مکرون در شبکهٔ ایکس نوشت: «سیسیل کوهلر و ژاک پاریس پس از سه سال و نیم بازداشت در ایران، آزاد شده‌اند و در راه بازگشت به فرانسه هستند».
این دو شهروند فرانسوی پس از بیش از سه سال زندان به اتهام جاسوسی، در ماه نوامبر آزاد شده بودند.
یک منبع در وزارت خارجه فرانسه گفت که آن‌ها بامداد سه‌شنبه همراه با سفیر فرانسه و در قالب یک کاروان دیپلماتیک ایران را ترک کرده‌اند و «در حال حاضر در جمهوری آذربایجان هستند».
سیسیل کوهلر و شریک زندگی‌اش ژاک پاریس اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۱ بازداشت شدند و دورا حبس خود را در زندان اوین سپری کردند. آن‌ها به تلاش برای «تحریک اعتراضات کارگری» متهم شده‌ بودند، اتهامی که خانواده‌هایشان قویاً رد کرده‌ بودند.

خبرگزاری دولتی ایرنا نوشت آزادی سیسیل کوهلر و ژاک پاریس، دو شهروند فرانسوی، در چارچوب تفاهمی میان تهران و پاریس انجام شده و فرانسه در این چارچوب متعهد به آزادی مهدیه اسفندیاری و پس‌گرفتن شکایت خود از جمهوری اسلامی در دیوان بین‌المللی دادگستری شده بود.
مهدیه اسفندیاری، شهروند ایرانی، اسفند ۱۴۰۴ از سوی دادگاهی در پاریس به اتهام «تمجید از تروریسم» از طریق حمایت در شبکه‌های اجتماعی از حمله هفتم اکتبر حماس به اسرائیل، به چهار سال حبس و ممنوعیت دائمی ورود به خاک فرانسه محکوم شده بود.
