On Tuesday, April 25, the President of the United States sharply criticized Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy and one of his main European allies, stating that she is "lacking courage" in joining the war against Iran.

Donald Trump, in an interview with the Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera," said: "I was shocked by her. I thought she was brave, but I was wrong."

This interview was published a day after Meloni called Trump's criticisms of Pope Leo XIII, following the repeated requests from the leader of the world's Catholics to end the war in the Middle East, "unacceptable." Trump told the newspaper that it is actually Meloni who is "unacceptable," claiming that she does not care if Iran acquires nuclear weapons.

The President of the United States also stated that Meloni does not want Italy to get involved in a war that began with Israeli and American attacks on Iran, while a large portion of the country's oil is sourced from that region.

رئیس‌جمهور آمریکا روز سه‌شنبه ۲۵ فروردین با انتقاد تند از جورجا ملونی، نخست‌وزیر ایتالیا و یکی از متحدان اصلی اروپایی‌اش، گفت که او در پیوستن به جنگ با ایران، «فاقد شجاعت» است.

دونالد ترامپ در گفت‌وگو با روزنامه ایتالیایی «کوریه‌ره دلا سرا» گفت: «درباره او شوکه شدم. فکر می‌کردم شجاع است، اما اشتباه می‌کردم».

این مصاحبه یک روز پس از آن منتشر شد که ملونی انتقادهای ترامپ از پاپ لئو چهاردهم، پس از درخواست‌های مکرر رهبر کاتولیک‌های جهان برای پایان دادن به جنگ در خاورمیانه، را «غیرقابل قبول» خوانده بود.
ترامپ به این روزنامه گفت که در واقع این ملونی است که «غیرقابل قبول» است و مدعی شد او اهمیتی نمی‌دهد که ایران به سلاح هسته‌ای دست پیدا کند.

رئیس‌جمهور آمریکا همچنین گفت ملونی نمی‌خواهد ایتالیا در جنگی که با حملات اسرائیل و آمریکا به ایران آغاز شد، درگیر شود؛ در حالی که بخش زیادی از نفت این کشور از همین منطقه تأمین می‌شود.
