Donald Trump, the President of the United States, on Tuesday, April 27, reacted to recent statements by Friedrich Merz regarding the Islamic Republic and the war, accusing Merz of not understanding the danger of Iran's potential acquisition of nuclear weapons.
Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social: "Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, thinks that having nuclear weapons for Iran is not a problem. He doesn't understand at all what he is talking about! If Iran has nuclear weapons, the whole world will be taken hostage. I am currently doing something with Iran that other countries or presidents should have done a long time ago. It’s no surprise that Germany is in such a weak position, both economically and otherwise!"
Recently, Merz had mentioned the European Union's readiness to gradually reduce sanctions against Iran if a deal is reached; statements that were also met with criticism from the European Commission. Merz has been a supporter of U.S. and Israeli policy since the beginning of the war.

ترامپ در شبکه اجتماعی تروث سوشال نوشت: «فریدریش مرتس، صدراعظم آلمان، فکر میکند داشتن سلاح هستهای برای ایران مشکلی ندارد. او اصلا نمیفهمد درباره چه چیزی صحبت میکند! اگر ایران سلاح هستهای داشته باشد، کل جهان به گروگان گرفته خواهد شد. من همین حالا در حال انجام کاری با ایران هستم که سایر کشورها یا روسایجمهور باید مدتها پیش انجام میدادند. تعجبی ندارد که آلمان، هم از نظر اقتصادی و هم از جهات دیگر، چنین وضعیت ضعیفی دارد!»
مرتس در روزهای اخیر از آمادگی اتحادیه اروپا برای کاهش تدریجی تحریمها علیه ایران در صورت دستیابی به توافق خبر داده بود؛ اظهاراتی که با انتقاد کمیسیون اروپا نیز همراه شد. مرتس از ابتدای جنگ از حامیان سیاست آمریکا و اسرائیل بود.
