The Canadian border police prevented the entry of Mehdi Taj, the president of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hedayat Mombini, the secretary of the federation, and their companions into Vancouver to attend the FIFA conference, and returned them to Iran.

The government website "Varzesh-e Se" confirmed this news on Wednesday, April 9, stating that despite having received travel authorization to Canada (not a visa), they were forced to return to Iran after a long wait due to the immigration police's decision and the rejection of their visa application.

The executive committee of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran also did not attend the annual meeting of the Asian Football Confederation in Vancouver on Tuesday, April 8. The Secretary-General of the Asian Confederation announced the reason for the absence of the representatives of the Islamic Republic as "visa issues."

According to domestic media, the representatives of the Islamic Republic's football began a "long and exhausting" journey to reach Vancouver in western Canada on Saturday. They traveled overland from the northwestern borders of Iran to the city of Van in Turkey, then headed to Istanbul, and from there took a long flight to Vancouver; however, due to the decision of the Canadian border police, they were not allowed to enter the country.

Mehdi Taj, the president of the Islamic Republic's Football Federation, is considered inadmissible for entry under Canadian immigration laws due to his executive background in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which Canada designates as a terrorist group.

Nevertheless, the Canadian government had issued him a temporary residence permit to enter Vancouver under "strict conditions" to participate in the FIFA congress on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

This action by the Liberal government of Mark Carney faced widespread protests from Iranians residing in Canada, as well as opposition from the Conservative Party.

Since June 2023, Canada has listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps among "terrorist" groups.

The 76th annual meeting of FIFA will be held on Thursday, April 10, in Vancouver, Canada. This meeting is set to discuss the latest developments related to the 2026 World Cup, with less than 45 days remaining until this important event. Vancouver is one of the host cities for the World Cup matches.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11, hosted jointly by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with the matches of the Islamic Republic's national team scheduled to take place in the western cities of Seattle and Los Angeles in the United States.

پلیس مرزی کانادا از ورود مهدی تاج، رئیس فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی ایران، هدایت ممبینی، دبیر فدراسیون، و همراهان آنها به ونکوور برای شرکت در اجلاس فیفا، جلوگیری کرد و آنها را به ایران بازگرداند.

سایت حکومتی «ورزش سه» روز چهارشنبه ۹ اردیبهشت با تایید این خبر نوشت که این افراد با وجود اینکه مجوز سفر به کانادا (و نه ویزا) را دریافت کرده بودند، با نظر پلیس مهاجرت این کشور و رد درخواست ویزای‌شان، پس از انتظاری طولانی، مجبور شده‌اند راه بازگشت به ایران را در پیش بگیرند.

هیئت اجرایی فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی ایران روز سه‌شنبه ۸ اردیبهشت هم در نشست سالانه کنفدراسیون فوتبال آسیا در ونکوور حاضر نشد. دبیرکل کنفدراسیون آسیا هنگام خواندن لیست حاضران، علت غیبت نمایندگان جمهوری اسلامی را «مشکلات ویزا» اعلام کرده بود.

به گزارش رسانه‌های داخلی، نمایندگان فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی برای رسیدن به ونکوور در غرب کانادا، از روز شنبه سفری «طولانی و خسته‌کننده» را آغاز کردند و از راه زمینی از مرزهای شمال‌غربی ایران به شهر وان ترکیه رفتند و سپس راهی استانبول شدند و از آن جا با پروازی طولانی، خود را به شهر ونکوور رساندند؛ ولی با تصمیم پلیس مرزی کانادا، اجازه ورود به این کشور را پیدا نکردند.

مهدی تاج، رئیس فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی، به دلیل سابقه اجرایی در سپاه پاسداران، که کانادا آن را گروه تروریستی می‌داند، طبق قوانین مهاجرتی کانادا، غیرمجاز برای ورود محسوب می‌شود.

با این وجود دولت کانادا برای او، اجازه اقامت موقت صادر کرده بود تا بتواند با «شرایط سختگیرانه» برای شرکت در کنگره فیفا روز پنجشنبه ۱۰ اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۵ وارد ونکوور شود.

این اقدام دولت لیبرال مارک کارنی با اعتراض گسترده ایرانیان ساکن کانادا و همچنین اعتراض حزب محافظه‌کار مخالف دولت روبرو شد.

کانادا از خرداد ۱۴۰۳ سپاه پاسداران را در فهرست گروه‌های «تروریستی» قرار داده است.

هفتادوششمین اجلاس سالیانه فدراسیون جهانی فوتبال فیفا روز پنجشنبه ۱۰ اردیبهشت به میزبانی شهر ونکوور در کانادا برگزار می‌شود. در این اجلاس قرار است تازه‌ترین تحولات مربوط به جام جهانی ۲۰۲۶ در فاصله کمتر از ۴۵ روز مانده به این رویداد مهم، مورد بررسی قرار گیرد. ونکوور یکی از شهرهای میزبان مسابقات جام جهانی است.

مسابقات جام جهانی فوتبال ۲۰۲۶ از روز ۲۱ خرداد به میزبانی مشترک کانادا، آمریکا، و مکزیک آغاز می‌شود و قرار است رقابت‌های تیم ملی جمهوری اسلامی ایران در شهرهای غربی سیاتل و لس‌آنجلس در آمریکا برگزار شود.
