Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, said on Thursday that Iran cannot hold the entire world hostage by blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

Mr. Merz, during a visit to a military training center, urged Iran to "come to the negotiating table and stop stalling."

He stated that he has been working to increase pressure through sanctions on Iran during the recent European Council meeting in Cyprus, adding that Iran's military program must come to an end and that there should be no further attacks against Israel or regional partners.

The recent remarks by the Chancellor of Germany come after criticisms from Donald Trump, the President of the United States, following Merz's statements about Iran. In his latest comments, Mr. Merz emphasized the importance of "reliable transatlantic partnership" without referencing Trump's remarks, stating: "In this particularly turbulent time, we are following a clear compass. This compass continues to point towards a united NATO and a reliable transatlantic partnership." He mentioned that Berlin is "in close and reliable contact with its partners, including and especially with Washington" regarding the consequences of the war in the Middle East.

Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social: "The Chancellor of Germany should focus more than anything on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine and intervene less in the affairs of those who are eliminating the nuclear threat of the Islamic Republic; an action that, according to him, makes the world, including Germany, safer."

فردریش مرتس، صدراعظم آلمان، روز پنج‌شنبه گفت ایران نمی‌تواند با مسدود کردن تنگه هرمز، کل جهان را به گروگان بگیرد.

آقای مرتس در جریان بازدید از یک مرکز آموزش نظامی از ایران خواست تا به گفته او «به میز مذاکره بیاید و دست از وقت‌کشی بردارد».

او گفت در جلسه اخیر شورای اروپا در قبرس برای افزایش فشار تحریم‌ها بر ایران تلاش کرده است و افزود که برنامه نظامی ایران باید پایان یابد و دیگر هیچ حمله‌ای علیه اسرائیل یا شرکای منطقه‌ای صورت نگیرد.

اظهارات اخیر صدراعظم آلمان پس از انتقادهای دونالد ترامپ، رئیس جمهور آمریکا از او به دنبال اظهارات مرتس درباره ایران بیان شده است.
آقای مرتس در اظهارات تازه‌اش بدون اشاره به صحبت‌های ترامپ بر اهمیت «مشارکت قابل اعتماد فراآتلانتیکی» تأکید کرد و گفت: «در این دوران به ویژه آشفته، ما یک قطب‌نمای روشن را دنبال می‌کنیم. این قطب‌نما همچنان رو به سمت یک ناتوی متحد و یک مشارکت قابل اعتماد فراآتلانتیکی است.»
او گفت که برلین «در تماس نزدیک و قابل اعتماد با شرکایش، از جمله و به ویژه با واشینگتن» در مورد پیامدهای جنگ در خاورمیانه است.
