South Korea announced on Tuesday, May 4, that following a request from Donald Trump, the President of the United States, for Seoul to participate in operations in the Strait of Hormuz after an attack attributed to the Islamic Republic on one of its ships, it will "review its position on joining U.S. operations in the Strait of Hormuz."

The South Korean Ministry of Defense stated that it will "carefully examine its position," but did not make any commitment to change it.

The ministry announced that Seoul will assess its position based on international law, the safety of international maritime routes, its alliance with the United States, and the security situation on the Korean Peninsula. The country added that it has "actively participated in international discussions on cooperation to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz."

کره جنوبی روز سه‌شنبه ۱۵ اردیبهشت اعلام کرد که پس از درخواست دونالد ترامپ، رئیس‌جمهوری آمریکا از سئول برای شرکت در عملیات تنگه هرمز پس از حمله منتسب به جمهوری اسلامی به یکی از کشتی‌هایش، «موضع خود را در مورد پیوستن به عملیات ایالات متحده در تنگه هرمز» مورد  «بازنگری» خواهد کرد.

وزارت دفاع کره جنوبی علام کرد که «موضع خود را به دقت بررسی خواهد کرد»، اما هیچ تعهدی برای تغییر آن نداد.

این وزارتخانه اعلام کرد که سئول موضع خود را بر اساس قوانین بین‌المللی، ایمنی مسیرهای دریایی بین‌المللی، اتحاد خود با ایالات متحده و وضعیت امنیتی شبه جزیره کره بررسی خواهد کرد. این کشور افزود که «به طور فعال در بحث‌های بین‌المللی در مورد همکاری برای تضمین عبور ایمن از تنگه هرمز شرکت داشته است».
