Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, in another part of his press conference regarding the people of Iran said: "I think President Trump believes that the situation of the people of Iran under this regime is truly heartbreaking. I have said before that I do not know of a country where the gap between the people and those who govern the country is this wide."

He added: "This country is run by radical Shia clerics, and this is not the true image of the people of Iran. The people of Iran may be Shia, but they are not radical and they are not clerics. They just want a normal and natural life; in many ways, a very modern country with an incredible history and heritage."

The U.S. Secretary of State emphasized: "The people of Iran are victims of this regime every day. And the President has a deep empathy for what happens to them."

Marco Rubio, in response to a question about Donald Trump's statements regarding military assistance to the people of Iran to fight the Islamic Republic, said: "Ultimately, what the President expresses—and I believe he has expressed this many times—is that he wishes the people of Iran did not have such conditions."

Mr. Rubio said that Donald Trump "is truly heartbroken when he sees these images (of the regime's violence against the people). Imagine you are an Iranian; you are dissatisfied that the economy is not working for you, you have no freedom, and you have no opportunity to express your opinions. You have friends who have been shot in the head just for participating in protests. To see such treatment of these people and consequently having no means to confront their own government is truly painful for him."

Mr. Rubio told reporters that this regime's violence also dates back to the protests of 2009 "when people were massacred in the streets. This is a savage regime, friends. These are people who hang others in the town square from cranes for everyone to see."

مارکو روبیو، وزیر خارجه آمریکا در بخش دیگری از نشست خبری خود درباره مردم ایران گفت: «فکر می‌کنم رئیس‌جمهور ترامپ معتقد است که وضعیت مردم ایران زیر این رژیم واقعاً دلخراش است. من قبلاً هم گفتم کشوری را نمی‌شناسم که در آن فاصله و شکاف بین مردم و کسانی که کشور را اداره می‌کنند به این اندازه زیاد باشد.»

او افزود: «این کشور توسط روحانیون رادیکال شیعه اداره می‌شود، و این تصویر واقعی مردم ایران نیست. مردم ایران شاید شیعه باشند، اما رادیکال نیستند و روحانی هم نیستند. آن‌ها فقط یک زندگی عادی و طبیعی می‌خواهند؛ در بسیاری جهات کشوری بسیار مدرن با تاریخ و میراث فوق‌العاده.»

وزیر خارجه آمریکا تاکید کرد: «مردم ایران هر روز قربانی این رژیم هستند. و رئیس‌جمهور نسبت به آنچه بر سر آن‌ها می‌آید همدلی عمیقی دارد.»

مارکو روبیو، وزیر امور خارجه آمریکا در پاسخ به سوالی درباره اظهارات دونالد ترامپ در خصوص کمک تسلیحاتی به مردم ایران برای مبارزه با جمهوری اسلامی گفت: «در نهایت، آنچه رئیس‌جمهوری بیان می‌کند—و به‌نظر من بارها هم بیان کرده—این است که آرزو می‌کند ای کاش مردم ایران چنین شرایطی نداشتند.»

آقای روبیو گفت دونالد ترامپ «با دیدن این تصاویر (خشونت‌های رژیم علیه مردم) واقعاً دل‌شکسته می‌شود. تصور کنید شما یک ایرانی هستید؛ از این‌که اقتصاد برایتان کار نمی‌کند ناراضی هستید، آزادی ندارید و فرصتی برای بیان عقاید خودتان ندارید. دوستانی دارید که صرفاً به‌خاطر شرکت در اعتراضات، با شلیک گلوله به سر کشته شده‌اند. این‌که ببیند با این مردم چنین رفتاری می‌شود و در نتیجه هیچ ابزاری برای مقابله با دولت خودشان ندارند، برای او واقعاً دردناک است.»

آقای روبیو به خبرنگاران گفت این خشونت‌های رژیم به اعتراضات سال ۲۰۰۹ نیز برمی‌گردد «که در آن مردم را در خیابان‌ها قتل‌عام کردند. این یک رژیم وحشی است، دوستان. این‌ها افرادی هستند که مردم را در میدان شهر از جرثقیل آویزان می‌کنند تا همه ببینند.
