Isa Hopeful, a veteran Iranian traveler, documentary filmmaker, and researcher, who, along with his brother, was considered one of the enduring figures in the history of contemporary Iranian tourism, passed away on Saturday, May 8, at the age of 97. According to IRNA, he had been hospitalized for a few days due to illness and old age.

Isa Hopeful, born on December 23, 1929, along with his brother Abdullah, were among the first contemporary Iranian travelers who began their long and research-oriented journeys to remote parts of the world in the mid-20th century. These two brothers, whose roots trace back to the village of Fashendak in the Alborz province, traveled among tribes, cultures, and lesser-known communities.

The Hopeful brothers traveled for years across various continents using motorcycles, cars, and simple travel tools, documenting a unique collection of films, photographs, and ethnographic records from areas that many of them have since changed or no longer exist.

The Hopeful Brothers Museum in the Saadabad Palace complex continues to remind us of these journeys and research efforts. A tribute was planned for Isa Hopeful on International Museum Day, May 17, 2026, but he passed away before this ceremony.

His younger brother, Abdullah Hopeful, also passed away at the age of 90 in Chile on July 14, 2022.
