Ismail Baqai, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote in a message on the social media platform X, accompanied by an image of the rock relief depicting the victory of Shapur I of the Sasanian Empire over the Roman Emperor, "When Iranians thwarted delusional invaders."

In this message, which is a reference to the maritime blockade of Iranian ports by the United States, he stated, "The Romans believed that Rome was the center of the world; however, Iranians shattered this illusion."

Mr. Baqai's message, which has been widely shared in the Telegram channels of Iranian state media, seems to have been reinterpreted using the rock relief of Shapur's victory over the Roman emperors at Naqsh-e Rustam in Fars Province.

Mr. Baqai, who has recently been appointed as the spokesperson for Iran's negotiating team by Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, referred to the military campaign of Marcus Julius Philippus, known as Philip the Arab, against the Sasanian Empire, stating that his campaign "did not lead to a Roman victory but ended in a peace agreement with the conditions set by Shapur I; the emperor was forced to come to terms with reality."

اسماعیل بقائی، سخنگوی وزارت امور خارجه، در پیامی در شبکه اجتماعی ایکس با درج تصویر سنگ‌نگاره پیروزی شاپور اول ساسانی بر امپراتور روم، نوشت: «وقتی ایرانیان مهاجمان متوهم را ناکام گذاشتند.»

او در این پیام که کنایه‌ای است به محاصره دریایی بنادر ایران توسط آمریکا نوشت: «رومیان تصور می‌کردند که رم مرکز عالم است؛ اما ایرانیان این توهم را در هم شکستند.»

پیام آقای بقایی که به نحو گسترده‌ای در کانال‌های تلگرامی رسانه‌های حکومتی ایران بازنشر شده است به نظر می‌رسد که با استفاده از سنگ‌نگاره پیروزی شاپور بر امپراتوران روم در نقش رستم استان فارس بازنقش شده است.

آقای بقایی که اخیرا با حکم محمدباقر قالیباف به عنوان سخنگوی هیئت مذاکره‌کننده ایران هم منصوب شده است با اشاره به لشگرکشی مارکوس یولیوس فیلیپوس معروف به فیلیپ عرب، امپراتور روم، علیه امپراتوری ساسانیان، نوشت که لشگرکشی او «منجر به پیروزی رومیان نشد بلکه به صلحی با شروط شاپور اول ختم شد؛ امپراتور ناچار شد با واقعیت کنار بیاید.»
