The judiciary of the Islamic Republic announced on Wednesday, June 20, that Sadegh Zibakalam, a former professor at Tehran University and political activist, has been arrested.

The Mizan news agency, affiliated with Iran's judiciary, reported that the "judicial supervision order" against Mr. Zibakalam was intensified on June 7, and due to a new interview he conducted, charges were filed against him, leading to his arrest this morning.

The charges on June 7 came after the publication of Sadegh Zibakalam's interview with the British network "Channel 4." In this conversation, conducted in English, the political activist and analyst referred to Ali Khamenei, the former leader of the Islamic Republic, as the "backbone of the hardliners" in Iran, stating that throughout his 36 years of leadership, he promoted ideas such as "anti-Americanism, the destruction of Israel, and support for Hamas and Hezbollah."

Zibakalam also expressed doubts about Mojtaba Khamenei, the new leader, having his father's ideas and stated that he cannot attain the power and position of the former leader of the Islamic Republic.

He had been arrested in Ordibehesht 1403 following the formation of three judicial cases and was released from prison in Tir of the same year due to "suffering from cancer."

قوه قضائیه جمهوری اسلامی روز چهارشنبه ۲۰ خرداد خبر داد که صادق زیباکلام، استاد سابق دانشگاه تهران و فعال سیاسی، بازداشت شده است.

خبرگزاری میزان، وابسته به دستگاه قضائی ایران، اعلام کرد که «قرار نظارت قضائی» بر آقای زیباکلام روز ۱۷ خرداد تشدید شده بود و به دلیل انجام مصاحبه‌ای جدید، علیه او اعلام جرم و سپس صبح امروز بازداشت شد.

اعلام جرم روز ۱۷ خرداد در پی انتشار مصاحبه صادق زیباکلام با شبکه بریتانیایی «کانال ۴» رخ داد.
این فعال و تحلیلگر سیاسی در این گفت‌وگو به زبان انگلیسی، علی خامنه‌ای، رهبر سابق جمهوری اسلامی، را «ستون فقرات تندروها» در ایران خواند و گفت او در طول مدت رهبری خود به مدت ۳۶ سال ایده‌هایی مانند «آمریکاستیزی، نابودی اسرائیل، حمایت از حماس و حزب‌الله» داشت.
زیباکلام درباره مجتبی خامنه‌ای، رهبر جدید، نیز گفت تردید دارد او ایده‌های پدرش را داشته باشد و همچنین اعلام کرد که او نمی‌تواند قدرت و جایگاه رهبر سابق جمهوری اسلامی را به دست بیاورد.

او در اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۳ در پی تشکیل سه پرونده قضائی بازداشت شده بود و تیر ماه همان سال به دلیل «ابتلا به بیماری سرطان» از زندان آزاد شد.
