On Thursday, CNN reported, citing a senior Pentagon official and two U.S. government officials, that the U.S. military's plans to seize Kharg Island in southern Iran had been prepared "months ago," but were set aside due to being "too risky."

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, recently expressed his desire to take control of this island as one of the most important infrastructures for Iran's oil exports.

CNN quoted U.S. officials as saying: "The prevailing view in the White House and the Pentagon is that seizing Kharg Island or destroying its energy infrastructure would effectively bankrupt Iran and reduce its capabilities to the point where it would no longer be able to continue the war."

At the same time, government officials have told the U.S. President that such an operation would require a large number of ground forces and "could lead to heavy casualties among American troops."

CNN claimed that the Pentagon and the White House have considered any action to seize Kharg Island as a "last resort"; an action that, according to U.S. officials, "could change the balance of the war, but would come at a very high cost."

شبکه خبری سی‌ان‌ان روز پنجشنبه به نقل از یک مقام ارشد پنتاگون و دو مقام دولت آمریکا اعلام کرد که طرح‌های ارتش ایالات متحده برای تصرف جزیره خارگ در جنوب ایران از «ماه‌ها پیش» تهیه شده، اما به دلیل «بیش از حد پرخطر بودن» کنار گذاشته شده‌اند.

دونالد ترامپ، رئیس‌جمهور آمریکا، ساعتی پیش از تمایل خود برای در اختیار گرفتن این جزیره به عنوان یکی از مهم‌ترین زیرساخت‌های صادرات نفت ایران خبر داد.

سی‌ان‌ان به نقل از مقام‌های آمریکایی نوشت: «دیدگاه غالب در کاخ سفید و پنتاگون این است که تصرف جزیره خارگ یا نابود کردن زیرساخت‌های انرژی این جزیره، عملاً ایران را ورشکسته خواهد کرد و توانایی‌های آن را تا حدی کاهش می‌دهد که دیگر قادر به ادامه جنگ نباشد.»
در عین حال مقام‌های دولتی به رئیس‌جمهور آمریکا گفته‌اند که چنین عملیاتی نیاز به نیروهای زمینی پرشمار خواهد داشت و «ممکن است به تلفات سنگین نیروهای آمریکایی منجر شود».

سی‌ان‌ان ادعا کرده که پنتاگون و کاخ سفید هرگونه اقدام برای تصرف جزیره خارگ را به عنوان یک «گزینه نهایی» در نظر گرفته‌اند؛ اقدامی که به گفته مقام‌های آمریکایی «می‌تواند موازنه جنگ را تغییر دهد، اما هزینه بسیار بالایی خواهد داشت».
