The U.S. Secretary of State, on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting in Manila, reiterated his previous statements about Iran's "unreadiness for an agreement," saying, "They will pay the price for this."
Marco Rubio said on Thursday, July 23, "The cost for Iran increases every night until they wake up," adding, "Despite Iran's bravado, they are in severe distress, and this suffering will continue."
The U.S. Secretary of State also expressed hope that the Iranian government would "likely be ready for an agreement soon," but emphasized that they are clearly not ready for an agreement at this time, "at least not one they would be willing to accept."
In response to a question about Donald Trump's recent statements regarding Iran paying a price for the deaths of American soldiers and attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio said Trump's policy is "an eye for an eye, and Iran will pay a heavy price."
The U.S. Secretary of State also expressed hope for a cessation of attacks by the Houthis in Yemen, stating, "I hope they de-escalate; Iran has deceived them."

وزیر خارجه آمریکا، در حاشیهٔ نشست آسهآن در مانیل، با تکرار اظهارات پیشین خود مبنی بر «آماده نبودن ایران برای توافق» گفت: «آنها هزینهٔ این موضوع را خواهند پرداخت.»
مارکو روبیو روز پنجشنبه یکم مرداد گفت «هزینهٔ ایران هر شب بیشتر میشود تا زمانی که به خود بیایند» و افزود: «با وجود جسارت ایران، آنها بهشدت در عذاباند و این رنج همچنان ادامه خواهد یافت.»
وزیر خارجه آمریکا در عین حال ابراز امیدواری کرد که حکومت ایران «احتمالاً بهزودی» آمادهٔ توافق شود، اما تأکید کرد در حال حاضر بهوضوح آمادهٔ توافق نیستند، «حداقل نه توافقی که حاضر باشند با آن کنار بیایند».
روبیو در پاسخ به سؤالی دربارهٔ اظهارات اخیر دونالد ترامپ دربارهٔ پرداخت هزینه از سوی ایران در ازای کشته شدن سربازان آمریکایی و حمله به کشتیها در تنگهٔ هرمز نیز گفت سیاست ترامپ «سر در برابر چشم است و ایران هزینهٔ سنگینی خواهد پرداخت.»
وزیر خارجهٔ آمریکا همچنین با ابراز امیدواری نسبت به توقف حملات حوثیهای یمن گفت: «امیدوارم آنها تنشزدایی کنند، ایران آنها را فریب داده است.»
