The New York Times, citing several unnamed Iranian and Western officials, reported that the Iranian government intended to respond to Ukraine's attack on an Iranian ship by attacking a port in Ukraine, but refrained from taking this action following diplomatic efforts.

The newspaper quoted these officials as saying that Iran was expected to launch a small warhead ballistic missile towards Ukraine in this attack to cause relatively minor damage and symbolically respond to Ukraine's attack. The officials stated that the target of the attack was likely one of the ports in Ukraine on the Black Sea.

According to this report published early Wednesday, August 7, officials of the Islamic Republic hoped that this conflict would end with their retaliatory strike, but Western officials warned that predicting how Ukraine would react was difficult.

روزنامهٔ نیویورک‌تایمز، به نقل از چند مقام ایرانی و غربی که نام‌شان اعلام نشده، گزارش داد که حکومت ایران قصد داشت در واکنش به حملهٔ اوکراین به یک کشتی ایرانی، به یک بندر در اوکراین حمله کند، اما به‌دنبال اقدامات دیپلماتیک از انجام این اقدام خودداری کرد.

این روزنامه به نقل از این مقام‌ها نوشته است که انتظار می‌رفت ایران در این حمله یک موشک بالستیک با کلاهک کوچک به سمت اوکراین شلیک کند تا خسارت نسبتاً کمی به بار آورد و به‌صورت نمادین پاسخی به حملهٔ اوکراین داده باشد. این مقام‌ها گفتند که هدف حمله احتمالاً یکی از بنادر اوکراین در دریای سیاه بود.

بر اساس این گزارش بامداد چهارشنبه هفتم مرداد منتشر شد، مقام‌های جمهوری اسلامی امیدوار بودند این درگیری با حملهٔ تلافی‌جویانهٔ آن‌ها پایان یابد، اما مقام‌های غربی هشدار دادند که پیش‌بینی چگونگی واکنش اوکراین دشوار است.
