Reuters reported, citing regional sources, that the Houthis in Yemen are considering a plan to impose fees on commercial ships passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait; a move that, according to these sources, has emerged following the announcement of a maritime blockade by Saudi Arabia and could increase pressure on the United States.
According to these sources, the Houthis are examining the possibility of charging fees from most ships that transit through Bab al-Mandab, the strategic passage between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, but no specific timeline for implementing this plan has been set. The Houthi media office did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Two regional officials informed by the Islamic Republic told Reuters that Houthi officials discussed the imposition of fees on ships passing through Bab al-Mandab during their visit to Iran in June for the funeral of Ali Khamenei. According to sources, the aim of this plan is to normalize the collection of fees from international waterways and to increase pressure on the United States.
