On Thursday, August 8, NBC News reported, citing a U.S. official, that Donald Trump, the President of the United States, became frustrated during a meeting last week over the protracted nature of the war, the limited military options against Iran, and the failure to reach an agreement, and he yelled at his advisors.
According to this official, contrary to Trump's public statements expressing satisfaction with the course of the war, neither he nor his senior advisors are happy with the current situation. One of Trump's allies said, "The President is frustrated; he didn't expect it to be this difficult to extract concessions from Iran, and there was no clear strategy on how to reach an endpoint."
The report adds that the lack of clarity regarding Washington's ultimate goals—including whether the main objective is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, or to destroy Iran's missile and drone programs—has complicated planning for the end of the war. An American official stated, "We have had multiple tactical victories, but without a clear strategy, we are facing a strategic failure."
