The Financial Times reported on Wednesday, August 28, citing two senior officials of the Islamic Republic, that if Donald Trump decides to escalate the war, he will consider targeting military bases in Southeastern Europe. According to the report, a military base in Bulgaria and a NATO military base in Cyprus are among the potential new targets for Iran in the event of heightened conflicts. The Bulgarian parliament approved the use of one of its military bases by the U.S. last month.

The same two unnamed officials stated that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic have separately considered attacking undersea fiber optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz if tensions escalate.

A NATO official told Anadolu Agency, "NATO is prepared to counter any threat and will always do whatever is necessary to defend all allies." These remarks came after reports indicated that Iran is considering attacking U.S. military targets in Europe if Donald Trump further escalates the war.

This NATO official also referred to the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles earlier this year, stating that NATO's air defense intercepted missiles heading towards Turkey on four separate occasions. He regarded this action as a sign of the strength and effectiveness of NATO's deterrent and defensive posture.

فاینشنال تایمز روز چهارشنبه ۲۸ مردادماه با انتشار گزارشی به نقل از دو مقام ارشد جمهوری اسلامی گزارش کرد که اگر دونالد ترامپ تصمیم به گسترش جنگ بگیرد، هدف قرار دادن پایگاه‌های نظامی در جنوب شرقی اروپا را بررسی خواهد کرد.
براساس این گزارش، یک پایگاه نظامی در بلغارستان و یک پایگاه نظامی ناتو در قبرس از جمله اهداف احتمالی جدید ایران در صورت تشدید درگیری‌ها خواهند بود.
مجلس بلغارستان ماه گذشته با استفاده آمریکا از یکی از پایگاه‌های نظامی این کشور موافقت کرد.
همین دو مقام که نام آن‌ها اعلام نشده می‌گویند نیروهای مسلح جمهوری اسلامی به‌طور جداگانه حمله به کابل‌های فیبر نوری زیر دریایی در تنگه هرمز را در صورت تشدید تنش‌ها، بررسی کرده‌اند.

یک مقام سازمان پیمان آتلانتیک شمالی، ناتو، به خبرگزاری آنادولو گفت: «ناتو برای مقابله با هر تهدیدی آماده است و همواره هر کاری را که برای دفاع از همه متحدان لازم باشد، انجام خواهد داد.» این اظهارات پس از انتشار گزارش‌هایی مطرح شد که بر اساس آن‌ها، ایران در صورت تشدید بیشتر جنگ از سوی دونالد ترامپ، حمله به اهداف نظامی آمریکا در اروپا را بررسی کرده است.

این مقام ناتو همچنین به رهگیری موشک‌های بالستیک ایران در اوایل سال جاری اشاره کرد و گفت پدافند هوایی ناتو در چهار مورد جداگانه، موشک‌هایی را که به سمت ترکیه در حرکت بودند، رهگیری کرده است. او این اقدام را نشانه قدرت و موثر بودن وضعیت بازدارندگی و دفاعی ناتو دانست.
