در سال‌های گذشته آمارهای متفاوتی از قاچاق روزانه میلیون‌ها لیتر سوخت از ایران در رسانه‌ها منتشر شده است و برخی کارشناسان بیشتر قاچاق سوخت در کشور را سازمان‌یافته می‌دانند و برخی منابع رسمی انگشت اتهام را به سوی بخش‌ها و نهادهای دولتی و «خصولتی» گرفته‌اند.
