Scott Basset, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, said on Monday, September 9, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Asheville, USA, that Washington will continue to exert economic pressure on Tehran, and the results of this pressure may become apparent in the coming weeks or months.
In response to a question about the possible timing of the collapse of the Iranian economy, Basset stated: "The issue is that we have the blockade and we will continue to apply pressure. We have had very good discussions here, and I think this could happen in the coming weeks or months."
The U.S. Treasury Secretary added: "The economy does not necessarily have to collapse; the Iranian government just needs to wake up."
This U.S. official further noted that Basset will meet with his counterparts on the sidelines of the G20 meeting and will work to increase economic pressure and isolate Iran.
Scott Basset also referred to Iran's attack on U.S. military bases in Jordan, saying: "I think they are reacting militarily because they are failing economically."

اسکات بسنت، وزیر خزانه‌داری آمریکا، روز دوشنبه نهم شهریور ماه در حاشیه نشست «جی ۲۰» در اشویل آمریکا گفت واشنگتن به اعمال فشار اقتصادی بر تهران ادامه خواهد داد و ممکن است نتایج این فشار طی هفته‌ها یا ماه‌های آینده نمایان شود.
بسنت در پاسخ به پرسشی درباره زمان احتمالی فروپاشی اقتصاد ایران گفت: « مسئله این است که ما محاصره را داریم و به اعمال فشار ادامه خواهیم داد. ما همین حالا گفتگوهای بسیار خوبی در اینجا داشته‌ایم و فکر می‌کنم این می‌تواند طی هفته‌ها یا ماه‌ها رخ دهد.»
وزیر خزانه‌داری آمریکا افزود: «اقتصاد لزوما نباید فروبپاشد؛ فقط باید حکومت ایران به خود بیاید.»
این مقام آمریکایی افزود بسنت در حاشیه نشست گروه ۲۰ با همتایان خود دیدار خواهد کرد و برای افزایش فشار اقتصادی و منزوی کردن ایران تلاش خواهد کرد.
اسکات بسنت، در ادامه با اشاره به حمله ایران به پایگاه‌های نظامی آمریکا در اردن گفت: «به نظرم آنها به‌صورت نظامی دست به واکنش می‌زنند، چون از نظر اقتصادی در حال شکست خوردن هستند.»
