Axios reported, citing American officials, that the U.S. military targeted "two state-owned oil tankers" in southern Iran during a wave of attacks on the evening of September 10.

According to the report, these two tankers were anchored near the shores of Iran and north of the U.S. maritime blockade line, and American drones targeted their engine rooms with missile strikes.

U.S. Central Command, CENTCOM, did not make a specific mention of the attack on the tankers in its official statement following the Tuesday night attacks, but in the video footage released of the strikes, a scene showing a missile hitting a tanker can be seen.

Axios states that this is the first time the U.S. military has targeted Iranian tankers not to prevent violations of the maritime blockade, but in response to Iran's attacks on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

An American official described this action as part of a new policy known as "tanker for tanker," which, according to him, Donald Trump approved to deter further Iranian attacks on ships.

وب‌سایت اکسیوس به نقل از مقام‌های آمریکایی گزارش داد که ارتش ایالات متحده در جریان موج حملات شامگاه سه‌شنبه دهم شهریور به اهدافی در جنوب ایران، «دو نفتکش دولتی» این کشور را نیز هدف قرار داده است.

بر اساس این گزارش، این دو نفتکش در نزدیکی سواحل ایران و در شمال خط محاصره دریایی آمریکا لنگر انداخته بودند و پهپادهای آمریکایی با شلیک موشک موتورخانه‌های آن‌ها را هدف قرار دادند.

فرماندهی مرکزی ارتش آمریکا، سنتکام، در بیانیهٔ رسمی خود پس از حملات سه‌شنبه‌شب اشارهٔ مشخصی به حمله به نفتکش‌ها نکرد، اما در تصاویر ویدئویی که از حملات منتشر کرد، صحنه‌ای از اصابت موشک به نفتکش نیز دیده می‌شود.

اکسیوس می‌گوید این نخستین بار است که ارتش آمریکا نفتکش‌های ایرانی را نه برای جلوگیری از نقض محاصره دریایی، بلکه در واکنش به حملات ایران به کشتی‌های عبوری از تنگه هرمز هدف قرار می‌دهد.

یک مقام آمریکایی این اقدام را بخشی از سیاست تازه‌ای موسوم به «نفتکش در برابر نفتکش» توصیف کرده که به‌گفتۀ او دونالد ترامپ برای بازدارندگی از حملات بیشتر ایران به کشتی‌ها تأیید کرده است.
