An American official told Reuters on Tuesday, September 8, that a U.S. military unmanned underwater vehicle in the Middle East experienced a technical malfunction while monitoring the waters in support of the war against Iran.
This statement came hours after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the "capture" and "seizure" of an American underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the malfunctioning vehicle was of an "older model" and did not carry any classified sonar or radar equipment.
He added that the vehicle had experienced a technical failure more than a day ago but did not comment on its fate or the control of Iranian military forces over it.
In a statement, the IRGC claimed that "one of the most advanced smart unmanned submarines" of the U.S. military had become trapped early Tuesday morning.
Previously, there had been reports about the U.S. military conducting mine-clearing operations in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz using equipment such as unmanned underwater vehicles.

یک مقام آمریکایی روز سهشنبه ۱۷ شهریور به رویترز گفت یک شناور بدون سرنشین زیرسطحی نظامی آمریکا در خاورمیانه، هنگام پایش آبهای منطقه در حمایت از جنگ علیه ایران، دچار نقص فنی شده است.
این اظهارنظر ساعاتی بعد از آن منتشر شده که سپاه پاسداران انقلاب اسلامی از «شکار» و به «غنیمت گرفتن» یک شناور زیرسطحی آمریکایی در تنگه هرمز خبر داد.
مقام آمریکایی که به شرط ناشناس ماندن صحبت میکرد، گفت این شناور معیوب از «مدل قدیمیتر» بوده و هیچگونه تجهیزات سونار یا رادار طبقهبندیشده حمل نمیکرد.
او افزود این شناور بیش از یک روز پیش دچار نقص فنی شده است اما به سرنوشت آن و یا کنترل نیروهای نظامی ایران بر آن اشاره نکرد.
در بیانیه نیروی دریایی سپاه پاسداران ادعا شده که «یکی از مدرنترین زیر دریاییهای هوشمند و بدون سرنشین» ارتش آمریکا در بامداد روز سهشنبه به دام افتاده است.
پیش از این گزارشهایی درباره مینروبی آبهای تنگه هرمز توسط ارتش آمریکا با استفاده از تجهیزاتی مانند شناورهای زیر آبی بدون سرنشین منتشر شده بود.
