Destruction of the "Russian Caravanserai" in Sabzevar: quotes

The historically significant "Tumanian" house, known as the "Russian Barracks," in Sabzevar was demolished on Wednesday in broad daylight with a bulldozer, sparking widespread protests from cultural heritage activists.

Images shared on social media show that a bulldozer destroyed part of a historical building known as the "Russian Barracks" in Sabzevar on Wednesday, September 18.

The "Russian Barracks," or "Tumanian" house in Sabzevar, although not registered in the national heritage list, had been declared by cultural heritage authorities as a building of historical significance.

The architecture of this building dates back to the Pahlavi era, and during the occupation of Iran by the Russians, the Russian army was stationed there for a time, which is why it became known as the "Russian Barracks."

Mojtaba Kavyan, the director of cultural heritage and the manager of the historical fabric site in Sabzevar, told Seda-ye Mirath that this site was destroyed without coordination and without a permit from cultural heritage authorities, and a criminal complaint against the destroyers of this historically significant site is certain.
