The New York Times reported on Sunday, September 22, citing several Iranian officials, that Massoud Pezeshkian became extremely angry after the IRGC forces attacked three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz in early July, calling the action "reckless and irresponsible."

These attacks, which resulted in the fire of a liquefied gas tanker from Qatar and damage to other vessels, occurred just as Iran was nearing an agreement with the United States to end the conflicts.

According to the report written by Farnaz Fasihi based on Iranian officials, Pezeshkian contacted Ahmad Vahidi, the commander of the IRGC, after learning about the incident and demanded accountability in a harsh tone. However, Vahidi, while denying responsibility and expressing ignorance, informed the President that neither had he issued permission for this action nor was the Supreme National Security Council aware of the operation.

روزنامه نیویورک تایمز روز یکشنبه ۲۲ شهریور ماه در گزارشی به نقل از چند مقام ایرانی نوشت، مسعود پزشکیان، پس از حمله نیروهای سپاه پاسداران به سه کشتی تجاری در تنگه هرمز در اوایل تیرماه گذشته، به‌شدت خشمگین شده و این اقدام را «بی‌پروایانه و غیرمسئولانه» خوانده است.

این حمله‌ها که منجر به آتش‌سوزی یک نفت‌کش حامل گاز مایع قطر و آسیب به شناورهای دیگر شد، درست زمانی رخ داد که ایران به توافقی با ایالات متحده برای پایان دادن به درگیری‌ها نزدیک شده بود.

بر اساس این گزارش که فرناز فصیحی به نقل از مقامات ایرانی نوشته است، پزشکیان پس از آگاهی از این ماجرا با احمد وحیدی، فرمانده کل سپاه پاسداران، تماس گرفته و با لحنی تند خواستار پاسخگویی شده است. با این حال، وحیدی ضمن سلب مسئولیت و ابراز بی‌اطلاعی، به رئیس‌جمهوری اعلام کرده که نه مجوزی برای این اقدام صادر کرده و نه شورای عالی امنیت ملی از این عملیات مطلع بوده است.
