France announced that in response to the Iranian government's action of closing a French language training center affiliated with its embassy in Tehran, it will summon the Iranian ambassador and take "appropriate measures."
Pascal Confavreux, spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry, stated in a statement on Sunday, September 29, that "this new attack against France's cultural presence in Iran, following the assault on two French embassy staff members last July, is unjustifiable and unacceptable."
The semi-official news agency Tasnim reported on Sunday, September 29, that Iranian officials shut down this French language training center based on a judicial order from the Tehran prosecutor's office.
Iranian officials claim that this center had been operating for years without a permit and under the guise of foreign language education, despite repeated warnings to obtain a license.
Relations between the two countries have been tense in recent years over Iran's nuclear program and the detention of several French citizens by the Islamic Republic.
