Leaders of the two largest economies in the world met on Thursday, September 23, at the White House to discuss topics ranging from trade and tariffs to Taiwan, artificial intelligence, and the war in Iran.

During this meeting held at the White House, Xi Jinping urged Iran and the United States to resolve their issues through dialogue as soon as possible. The Chinese President simultaneously asked his American host to quickly end the war with Iran through negotiation.

Reuters, citing informed sources, reported that China, in pre-trip discussions before Xi Jinping's visit, proposed cooperation in applying pressure on Iran in exchange for a potential U.S. concession regarding arms sales to Taiwan. This proposal has not been officially confirmed by Beijing.

Taiwan was another sensitive topic during Thursday's meeting. China considers this democratically governed island part of its territory and has repeatedly opposed U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

According to China's official news agency, Xinhua, Mr. Xi urged Donald Trump at the White House to act with "foresight and caution" regarding the issue of Taiwan's "independence."

This was the second meeting between Trump and Xi this year and the first visit by a Chinese President to Washington in over a decade.

Xi Jinping arrived in the U.S. on Wednesday evening local time, and Donald Trump welcomed him at Andrews Air Force Base as he disembarked from his plane.

This is the first time in 11 years that a U.S. President has gone to this base to welcome a foreign leader. The last time was in 2015 when Barack Obama welcomed Pope Francis there. This is seen as a sign of special respect from Donald Trump towards his Chinese counterpart.

The White House also arranged an official dinner for Thursday night, to which several executives from major U.S. technology companies, including Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, OpenAI, Tesla, and Nvidia, have been invited.

Upon his arrival in the U.S. on Wednesday night, Xi Jinping expressed hope that relations between Beijing and Washington would become more stable and stated that the two countries should be "partners, not rivals."

Before the meeting of the two Presidents, senior economic officials from both countries had reached an agreement to extend the trade ceasefire.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott P. Amundson announced after discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng that the agreement that had halted a sharp increase in reciprocal tariffs would be extended until January 10. The current trade ceasefire was set to end in November.

During the trade war between the two countries, reciprocal tariffs had at one point exceeded 100%.

U.S. officials have also indicated the possibility of announcing agreements related to agriculture and non-tariff barriers. The U.S. claims that China has made progress in fulfilling its commitment to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft, although no new orders have been announced yet.
