The Colombian government announced on Thursday, September 23, the severance of diplomatic relations with Iran.
In a statement, the Colombian government said this decision was made based on considerations related to "national security at the hemisphere level" and has been in effect since September 19.
Colombia accused the Iranian government of having connections with "narcoterrorist groups" that, according to Colombia, threaten the security of the country.
The Colombian government also strongly criticized Tehran for blocking traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and for attacking other countries in the Middle East during the war with the United States and Israel.
