According to Axios, citing an informed source, Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, ordered the Iranian delegation present at the United Nations General Assembly, including Abbas Araqchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, to leave the U.S. immediately on Monday, October 6, after negotiations with the Islamic Republic reached a deadlock.
One U.S. official told Axios, "Rubio kicked out the Iranian delegation, which had overstayed its welcome. The General Assembly was over, and it was time for them to go." According to the report, the U.S. mission to the United Nations informed the Iranian delegation on Monday night that they must leave New York immediately.
Axios reported that Araqchi and the delegation members headed to the airport a few hours later and flew from New York to Doha early Tuesday morning. A second source also confirmed the U.S. request for the delegation's departure but stated that Araqchi was already scheduled to leave for Tehran on Monday night.
